Yet when you hear about all the higher education cuts and the outrage you NEVER hear the idea of possibly shutting down one or two of the useless schools. Hell look at MS as an example. You go to either Ole Miss or Ms State mainly depending on what you want to study.
Louisiana has 1 tier one school (LSU) and 3 tier 4 schools (LaTech, ULL, UNO). Mississippi has 3 tier 3 schools (OM, MSU, USM).

That's why that report is bogus. The media hypes it up because people care about it, and it's really the only comprehensive ranking out there of universities. But really, it's pretty unfair.

You guys are naive if you don't think most university presidents are doing the same to boost their schools rankings. Especially when the very first page of the survey states: "As in the past, your response to this survey will be kept confidential."
Confidential my arse. Machen is just unfortunate to get caught cause some reporter decided to exercise the Sunshine Laws.

to me the real issue isn't that he listed florida as distinguished, although that is ridiculous, it's that some of his other rankings are horrible. it's just a great example of the kind of crap that makes up us news' peer assessment score

That was a terrible placement of schools.

he rated georgetown and emory as just "good"
And ND. I was kind of confused by his whole criteria. Would be nice if he explained his reasoning somewhere.

Its pretty obvious that he is playing the system the way football coaches play the rankings.. Mark your school higher than the immediate competition around you. He knows Harvard and all will be at the top no matter what but he can play around with the schools that will be very close in rankings.. So he ranks his school higher and the schools that will have a wide range of votes lower.. This would help to push his school higher. So long as its not too obvious which may be the only thing keeping him from posting schools like ND as just adequate.

I experienced Cal and LSU for undergrad - two vastly diffreent social and academic experiences. Though I bleed purple and gold, the academics at LSU left a lot to be desired.
I'm skeptical of most school rating systems, but usually they are directionally correct. Obviously florida is inflated by the UF prez, but in general the consesus of these ratings makes sense. That being said, the enrollment and prof:student ratio stats kill large public schools, even though they dominate most research/science disciplines.

In ranking the University of Florida as "distinguished," he has it ranked ahead of the University of Chicago (strong), Georgetown University (good), Notre Dame (good), Johns Hopkins (strong), Dartmouth (good), Cornell (strong), Duke (strong), Penn (strong), Brown (good), and the University of Virginia (strong).
Ranking Florida academics ahead of Johns Hopkins, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Penn, Duke, etc. is insane. No way in hell UF is better academically than Ivy League schools.

It does, somewhat. When we quit funneling dollars into useless 4-year universities (read Nicholls, Southeastern, NSU, Grambling) then LSU might have the resources to become a top tier school.
I read somewhere once that, per capita, we have the most 4-year universities of any state.
NW La, NE La, SE La, Nicholls St and McNeese all need to be Junior Colleges. La.Tech, Grambling, Southern, Tulane, SW La and LSU should be the four year schools.....

LSU's rep does not really extend beyond the state line.....
This is so not true. Most of the Oil and Gas engineering that has gotten us where we are at in the states relative to technology for fuel and to drill out in deeper, harsher locations were/are LSU grads. They ahve a great rep for engineering.

Not one mention of Auburn being put on probation and almost getting their academic credentials pulled, and he ranks Auburn above LSU

Scratch Grambling and Southern from that list. In today's society there is no longer a need for HBCUs, especially those that are failing financially and academically and are within 10 miles of universities providing doctoral programs as Grambling is with Tech and Southern is with LSU.
I wish somehow that some of the smaller schools could be privatized and open up their funding.

This all about opinions, and positions. As in, what else would the UF president say about UF, other than "distinguished"? His position with UF would almost require that rating. And as for LSU, and the rest of the SEC, he's not going to play up the serious competition. "Adequate" is such a subjective term. UF is really hard to get into though, even for Floridians. But that's like packaging a mid-sized Chevy at high end BMW prices.

The most recent U.S. News and World Report rankings list LSU as a tier one school. Personally, we got great educations at LSU. My husband chose LSU over Notre Dame because of the quality of its engineering and music programs. LSU law school bar passage rates during my time in law school were 89%; Tulane students passed at a rate in the 50 to 60% range. The other law schools had even lower rates. My LSU Law degree allowed me to get a job with ease shortly out of school when my husband and I moved to Connecticut. As for my husband, he's an extremely talented engineer who receives job offers all the time.

With LSU in his "adequate" category are others like Samford (not Stanford),
The last President of a Florida university that trashed Samford, (a tier one school by the way) is now unemployed. The Florida State President, TK Wetherell, called Samford a "dipshit" school. He forgot that his governor and senator are Samford grads. Good luck with that Mr. Machen!
His feelings about LSU reflect the fact that he does not stay abreast of the current state of higher education and may be stranded in 1972.
