I just don’t understand the first half defense and not changing it til halftime. Baker dug us into a hole we could not recover from.

Woodland is good but not shutdown. It’s the same thing every year. He gets so much hype but I don’t see it. He’s scrappy and aggressive but gets bullied. Pickett on the other hand is lockdown. Besides that one lucky arse throw where Benefield bumped him the only thing DJ gave up was short routes when they had him playing 8 yards off

The first half was 100% to blame on scheme. When he adjusted the second half was much different.

It’ll go unnoticed but Pickett did a fantastic job on deuce Alexander. Guarded him on an island multiple times and suffocated him

They looked so confused playing off the line of scrimmage. Ole miss receivers were not touched and ran their routes at full speed. Safeties played 10 yards off on 3rd and 6. I mean wtf defense was that in the first half.

It was obvious they did the entire game plan of keeping things in front of them and not give up big plays. It was a horrible game plan in retrospect and Ole Miss ate it alive. I don’t know what they were thinking.

Id rather lose getting beat over the top than this mickey mouse 10 yard cushion bullshite. Tight press and attack. Make the qb make tight low percentage deep shots rather than short 5 to 8 yards open outs and digs every play

Pickett is a shutdown corner. The long ball in the first over Pickett and Benefield wasn’t on Pickett. He came off of his player to help with that play. The only thing I recall Pickett giving up was some short passes in front of him and that is a scheme thing.

#31 for us totally fricked up this with the touchdown right before halftime

Woodland is not great.

Alexander is their best WR and he was 3rd in receptions and 5th in average. It’s clear we keyed on him. Their TE Odom was a problem. The LBs couldn’t stay with him in man and Spears was out early. Ray killed us too.
2 good CBs only gets you so far when the other team has 4 or 5 good options and can also run the ball. There is a reason teams play more zone vs an offense like Ole Miss’. They will again next week, as that’s pretty much all Brad White does. And he gave Ole Kiss hell the last two seasons at UK.
One thing that was pointed out by an analyst online was that there were some correct defensive calls where our guys got out of their zones early and gave up easy completions. So throw rocks at the staff for not getting better execution out of the players, but they also have to be accountable when they’re well paid.

I don’t understand why we took so long to adjust

Spears probably makes that play. I really hope he isn’t seriously injured. Jimcoly was so bad that he got benched for the most part after the half.

But they recruit guys who excel at zone and rep it almost exclusively. Lsu recruits man corners and athletes. Let them be athletes. Too much thinking in zone. Just let them play

Raymond is known to be below average at coaching zone schemes for dbs unfortunately.....always been his weak link.
He also recruits man to man types primarily....Aidan Anding going down hurt a good bit of our depth

Most high school defenses aren’t running tons of zone.

good Dline
Interior D line is inexperienced man. Third game of the season. It's the real issue but the defense will be fine.
Chambliss should have been a first round draft pick. He's literally the same age as top NFL qbs right now

Woodland is a problem.
