Two Questions regarding our defense

1) For those who know more about this than me, do you see any difference in the style, philosophy, scheme of our defense compared to last year with Pelini vs the coordinators now?
2) Why does Patrick Peterson seem to only come in for Eugene as opposed to Hawkins? Quite frankly it seems to me that Eugene is playing better than Hawkins.

Philosophy, no. Scheme, yes. They're trying out some schemes that are definitely new, but whenever they go back to the old ones (especially LSU's basic nickel package), the same results occur.

No way.

Good question. I have been asking this question myself also.
IMO, J. Eugene has improved in every game he played so far. He is definitely a lock-down CB that we expected.

1) Second half vs AU and Moo U gave me flashbacks to Lou Teppers infamous soft zone. Little worried about the secondary.
2) I think Eugene played as well a game as I have ever seen him. Looked like a pretty good contact guy, can he play safety?

So you think that Hawkins is more developed than Eugene at this point? Do you think he is doing a better job in coverage? Why do you think MSU was able to get their RB's isolated on our LB's this weekend? I had not seen that happen before but it seemed like our LB's were forced into coverage situations where they were chasing faster backs in coverage all night. I never saw an adjustment to that.

1) Same philosophy, different scheme/packages. A lot of the defense is the same but a lot is definitely different. Partly the reason for the blown coverages, IMO, is all the new defensive packages they're using
2) Because Peterson is second string to that CB spot. And Eugene has played very well this season, as has Hawkins. They both are extremely athletic.

more man
same off-coverage and lack of blitzing

our CBs are 2 separate positions. if we run zone or if we're in man and they have WRs on both sides, the RCB is hawkins and LCB is eugene. PP is #2 behind eugene

hard to compare eugene and hawkins so far....
hawk has 2 picks...but he has also given up a couple of huge blown coverages...he tends to play less bump and run and more cushion
jai is more aggressive and his tackling is great...he just dives at peoples legs and they fall over...his confidence is outstanding

That is going to be horrible when playing UF. Tebow and his O-line have been rattled often when the opposing team brings pressure.

Umm...all those passes to the running backs that beat us were ALL in man defense.

I think the ONLY way to slow down Florida's offense is bringing pressure.

Think you want to contain Teebow and make him a hurried pocket passer, forcing him out of his game.

Ever since the south carolina game last year teams have spreading us out then cutting us up in the middle of the field with the short inside routs. the problem is not the secondary its the backers. I am little dissappointed the defensive coaches have stuck with "its breakdowns or bad execution" when truth be told its mismatches. My two cents: with dbs like jones and mccray who are almost as big as lb's and can stop the run why not go with the six dbs.

Bad news for you. He is part of the mismatch problem.

I don't see us being aggressive enough rushing the passer but I think we will soon get more of a rush.

No doubt McCray on a reciever down field is a mismatch. but having him underneath on runningbacks, tight ends, and recievers on slant routes would be better than any of our backers. I also think the lack beckwith is killing us as far as getting us in the right defense.

+1...I would much rather see peterson or jones in for McCray, even if they might be a little smaller than him.

I'm not sure how much Florida football you have watched sine Tebow took over.
When he faces no pressure, he carves up defenses.
Pretty much every time he has struggled(which isn't much) it has been from facing constant pressure.

I can only hope the lack of blitzes has been because we haven't needed them to win. I hope we bring some pressure against Florida. We get some pressure with 4 down lineman but bring another blitzer every now and then and you are talking sacks and grounding calls not just pressures.
I have faith in our coaches.
