Top 10 List of players that have to be retained this offseason

1. LT Dare Rosenthal- He continues to grow with every game played. They cannot afford another huge turnover on the offensive line. His past transgressions make him a high risk to leave. And despite being a clear NFL prospect, he is not ready for the league.
2. TE Arik Gilbert- self explanatory. With 2 more years of contribution left to the program, the cornerstone offensive recruit of the class has to be a top priority.
3. DE Ali Gaye- Like Rosenthal, a clear future NFL guy, but he is not ready for the league quite yet. Building block DL for 2021 is another must.
4. OG Ed Ingram- the first player to really speak out about being "all in" this year after the program has tumbled. Clear team leader. Offensive line cohesion is paramount going into 2021. Like Rosenthal, he has past issues that will weigh on his decision.
5. S Jacoby Stevens- With Vincent opting out, Stevens has had to play a more traditional safety position, and it has kind of hurt his stock, imo. He can leave this offseason and be drafted based on his 2019 tape, which was spectacular. Will he want to spend a 5th year in college? Wouldn't hurt to rebuild his stock in a more box safety, or LB role. Would consider him a high risk to test the waters at this point.
6. C Liam Shanahan- He has gotten better as the season has gone on. Spend a full year in the S&C program, and I really think you will see an All-SEC type center next year. Would also allow Chasen Hines to focus on getting his weight down and on being a G exclusively. And would also allow LSU to recruit/or develop their C of the future, as I do not think that guy is currently on the roster. If his mind if set on playing professional football, that would be a huge benefit to him.
7. DE Andre Anthony- Have really liked what I have seen from him this year. Remember, he came in as more of a 4-3 DE. Played in the 3-4 for years, then back to the 4-3. He's really been dicked around, and he looks to be settling in. Would be nice depth at this position. Downside? It would be his 6th(!!!) year in college football.
8,9. DL Neil Farrell & Glen Logan: at one point I thought both of these guys were future pro defensive lineman. But man, did they get comfortable during the covid offseason. Both came in overweight and it has really showed in their play. Logan, like Anthony, is a 2016 recruit. It would be his 6th season. Im not sure he is draftable right now, but he could be. Farrell, through what i see on social media, seems to be a team leader.
10. CB Derek Stingley- Guy is the best player on the team. The staff needs him to buy into the idea that with a full season of outstanding play, can be one of the top 5 players taken in the draft and receive a huge pay day.

Keep only the players that have the desire and passion for the game. Frick the rest.

Keep any player that wants to come back.
No other option.

If we keep all ten of those guys it would indeed make a huge difference. It would really boost our roster numbers.

I agree with you but in reality I think if you get maybe 6 of the 10, you are doing pretty good given the NFL or bust mindset culture embedded in LSU's culture since the Miles era. Gilbert and Stingley are the only 2 where the NFL are bust is not an option for 2021.
Shanahan has gotten better each week, pass blocks pretty well as he has good feet, needs to get stronger for run blocking and I think I full year in LSU's strength and conditioning program would help him for run blocking and if the NFL is something he desires, he needs to come back.
I think the other guys all are probably those 5th to 7th round NFL draft picks that should come back and all could significantly improve their draft position.

I guess LSU is in a unique position with such low roster numbers that basically everyone can return if they want? I can’t remember, are they making an exception for the max numbers for next year?
Posted on 12/13/20 at 11:07 am to Lester Earl
Kind of counterintuitive to bring back low-ceiling players that led you to a 4-6 record if you want to get back to being a title contender
The truth is they’re not coming back unless theyre starting obviously, so in some areas you’re just limiting your team.
Do you want to see Shanihan’s shite get pushed in at the point of attack for another year and immediately causing road blocks for our RBs? I don’t.
It’s seems like this desire to re-recruit average players is born out of our numbers issues, rather than trying to really improve the team’s performance.
Screw Logan, I’m ready to see Roy and the youth take over at DT and a lot of other areas where we’ve had average play at best

They are so low i dont think they will have to crunch anything, but i do this they are waiving roster size for next year.

Seniors will be permitted to return next year and not count against a sport's roster or scholarship limits.

The problem for Farrell and Logan, I think, will be the talent coming in behind them. Roy is already productive. Guillory will only get better. If we land Smith, he will likely be in the rotation from day 1.
It’s a weird situation at DT. We really NEED Farrell and Logan for depth and the experience they bring to the table, but they might see less playing time if they stay.

Half those players you listed suck and helped lead us to a losing record which is why they’re upper classmen the NFL does not want — hence why they may consider coming back in the first place
This is LSU. Let the Liam Shanihans of the world move on to becoming financial advisors and let’s get some real players on the field that can move the fricking needle. GTFO with your cries for mediocrity

Whether they start or not won't be decided likely until fall camp. The best players should play. We need every player back that wants to return. Even horrible players.

The thing is, if they are both in shape, they can play some DE too. But even in a rotation, if they flash and play well, I think that could help their stock.
I fully expect Roy to start next year. Hopefully one of the 2 wants to return.
I saw Guillory last night on the field after the game. He looks like he is 380lbs lol.

I’d add QB. Whichever of the three that will consider transferring after the season.

Then why would they come back
A guy like Shanihan knows by now he has no pro football future after getting caved in by SEC DTs on a weekly basis. He’s a Harvard grad with bigger fish to fry than to prolong the inevitable down in Baton Rouge imo

every one of those players will either be drafted, or get a shot in an NFL camp as an undrafted player. lol
Every good college team has players like this on it. It's not detrimental to the future of the program in any way for them to return. In fact, it does nothing but boost their chances of winning.

So who is the center on our roster that’s going to be better next year?
This is such a lazy take. The number of underclassmen playing this year is a huge factor in our record. You need those experienced guys on the roster. They provide leadership, and they give young guys time to develop before getting thrown to the wolves.

Maybe getting a second year of grad school paid for is something he's interested in?
Everything is not about the NFL. Some of these players don't have pro potential, but another 12 months of free college is something attractive to a lot of people.

They have to right the ship. Currently the attitude at LSU is “get out ASAP”, and that mentality won’t work in the age of opt outs.
Recruiting a player doesn’t stop until he’s left the program.
