I guess since it's the south he feels like it's more acceptable for him to say this. If he called Chicago, Los Angeles, or Washington DC "The Third World", he might have people call him racist.

Taylor Lewan's (the one who made that comment) ex-girlfriend is from Baton Rouge (sister of Drew Dileo who played at Parkview Baptist and Michigan). I'm certain he's relatively aware of Baton Rouge outside of LSU and there was a bit of difference between stepping off of Michigan's campus in Ann Arbor and walking right into the Bottoms of BR after leaving The Varsity.

I really hate that take- a lot of posters on here fall in line with that narrative too, but that really only applies to the northern edge of campus. You go immediately east and south and there are some really nice, exclusive neighborhoods there, and for quite a ways. Of go west and you hit the river so that is n/a.

True, and north gat is not even that bad. A bunch of restaurants (Chimes, etc) border the campus. I lived off state street. North gate really isn't that bad. Now, if you continue North on Highland you will come up on a bad part of town, but you're not really that close to campus at that point. Is anyone afraid to go to Chimes?

Is it in the same place, as I used to go there late night to eat after drinking at the bars? I went to LSU in mid 80's

Been back to many games over the years even living in Abu Dhabi, but really never noticed if its still there just a little ways out the North Gate.

I hope you're not talking about Little Rock. For me, Little Rock carries the distinction of having homeless people absolutely hound me for money. Went in a restaurant to eat and the guy waited outside, when I left he botched me out for not getting spare cash to give him. He wasn't the only one either. Put Memphis up there too. Almost nothing redeeming about Memphis either.

Not sure why this has nothing but downvotes. It’s true for most larger cities in the SE. looking at the yearly “most dangerous metro areas” lists are pretty self-explanatory. Although LR isn’t an exception. It’s a nightmare too

Pretty sure the downvotes are for claiming that fricking Little Rock of all places is an exception

I guess if you want to hold him to his statement literally, then no, one step out of the North Gate is not "bad". However, you quickly realize you are in the hood within a couple of blocks past the gates on both Highland and Nicholson.

That said, Baton Rouge is a pretty depressing place in most parts. I never understood why they didn't relocate the BR airport. I imagine most people who fly in for the first time immediately want to GTFO after seeing the airport and it's surrounding areas.

I love Baton Rouge but this is definitely a thing for many people seeing it for the first time. But if you stay further East near Prairieville and Gonzalez then its filled with good restaurants and nicer areas. But near the airport and North side of Campus and its unfortunate.
