Steve Van Buren was only used as a blocking back until his senior year. Coach Bernie Moore said the people of BR would never let him forget that. Van Buren led the NCAA in scoring as a senior and went on to the NFL HOF with the Eagles.

The guy that won it that year was the first person west of Texas to win. Doesn't sound like there was a whole lot west coast bias at that time.

I think that’s why there was a bias to give it to a west coast guy. Kinda like when Woodson beat Peyton Manning, it was mostly because there was a media push to finally give it to a defensive player.

I think there was a media push to give it to a Michigan player.

Cecil Collins screwed himself.

Cecil screwed himself out of a football career, but not the heisman. He only played 4 games. Not really a statistically meaningful sample size. If you look at almost anybody's best 4 games they look like the best at whatever they're playing. The problem with the small sample size is we may have seen Cecil's best 4 games.

Cecils only games were as good as any of Fournette’s 3 game stretches. And were against pretty good defenses if I recall- auburn, joe lee Dunn’s Moo state, and got hurt playing a motivated vandy team playing their old coach dinardo for the first time.

His potential was off the charts.

Run Fournette in garbage time and he beats all of Henry’s stats. All he really needed was a 100 yard game against Bama.

This. Derek Henry needed 3 more games and almost 100 more carries to pass Fournette in rushing yards and TDs.

Small sample size and look up where the 4 teams finished in total defense
Miss St 35th
Auburn 38th
Akron 112th
Vandy 9th held Cecil to 13 yards

Now Vandy is the only team that finished with a highly rated defense and Cecil gained only 13 yards and played limited due to injury broken leg.

Not only small sample size but against one could argue not elite defenses. LSU also had a very good offensive line in 1997

Collins averaged around 124 yards per game vs MS State, Auburn, Akron and Vandy. How many touchdowns 3 or 4?

Stovall was the only one who got that close and has an argument that he should have won it. Mattheau was not the odds on favorite the year he was invited to the ceremony and he self destructed after that.

May not have been robbed of the Heisman (finished 4th)
but injuries robbed him from going down as one of the greatest NFL QB's of all time, IMHO.
