Tiger Rag: McMahon is “fired up” about transfer portal recruiting

quote:
“It’s still a little early to sign players, but I really love the direction that we’re going,” he said on Tiger Rag Radio Tuesday night. “We’re involved with a lot of really good players. And I’m fired up about the way it’s going here so far.”
And if you doubt they’ve gone all-in with the bigger budget storyline
quote:
two of McMahon’s three portal signees – guard Jordan Sears of UT Martin and guard Dji Bailey of Richmond – were not impressive. Each were from smallish schools and not ready for prime time SEC basketball. McMahon got what he paid for on a limited NIL budget, which was among the lowest in the SEC at approximately $2 million.
This year, McMahon’s NIL budget for roster retention and enhancement is approximately to $8 million, according to sources, because of newfound NIL strategies and financial deployment by LSU. That means McMahon can shop for much better players than last year. He is likely targeting four portal players, but in significantly more elite pools because of his larger budget.

quote:
“I think we’re in a really good place there,” McMahon said when asked about his additional portal recruiting resources. “There’s been a great investment in men’s basketball, and I think we’re really well positioned – not only from a retention standpoint, but the ability to go out and sign the players in the transfer portal that are going to come in here and impact winning, and allow us to build a NCAA Tournament team.”
quote:
Scott Woodward, who hired McMahon, decided to keep him amid this year’s losing season and give him a better chance in the near future with an enhanced NIL package for his roster construction.
“I’m thrilled with with that and appreciative of the opportunity to do it,” McMahon said. “And now we’ve got to execute the plan as these visits start up. We’ve been doing a lot of intel work, a lot of film study, and lots of zoom calls and phone calls and in-person visits. Really excited about the progress being made in the portal right now.”
quote:
Three LSU players entered the portal Monday – starting forward Corey Chest and guards Mike Williams III and Tyrell Ward, which left McMahon with eight scholarship players. Those moves may have been more mutual or even suggested by McMahon than some of the media reports on their departures indicated, as they freed up NIL money for incoming portal players. Williams was a reserve, and Ward sat out the whole season for mental health reasons. Chest had his moments last year, but was inconsistent.
“I’m certainly not looking to re-recruit or bring anyone back once they’ve made that decision,” McMahon said. “Wish them all the very best.”
Suggested Chest transfer

quote:
“I think it’s very realistic,” McMahon said when asked if he could be in the NCAA Tournament next season. “It’s happened in our league. I’m excited about the investment made into the program, and the talent we’re going to be able to identify and bring in. It’s college basketball in this new era, and that’s what we’re planning to do. I’m going to be really excited about the players we bring back and have already signed. We’ll combine those with the players we’ll bring in through the portal.”
quote:
“Then it’s time to get to work,” he said. “We have to make sure we get the right people on the bus, get them in the right seat and move the team forward toward the NCAA Tournament next season.”
Time to put up or get gone.

Saw the word fired and got excited! Only to be disappointed

I hope he's fired up. This is his last chance to put a respectable team on the floor or he's fired.
Even last year was average at best.

If he cant buy a team worth half a shite he will be next year. Woody praying and sacrificing softball and Torina for a 10 seed so he doesn’t have to fire McMahon but can still hire a new coach.

so you mean to tell me he is all "ra-ra" pumping sunshine? Of course he is. All that means nothing without results. He's gonna have to earn the fanbases investment in the program. Both he and Scott have allowed it to hit rock bottom, so its time to prove or get replaced (both of em)

No point in complaining now. Let’s ride this next season and if you can’t put out… then you’re gone.

Holy wall of text!
To him, "fired up" means he just woke up from a nap and was warm from too many blankets.

I'd be fired up too if I had a cozy gig where I could suck at my job and still make millions

Unfortunately, $8 million still won't teach his ole sling blade simple jack arse how to coach and develop players.
Can't wait to see an $8 million roster look like it was put together for tree fiddy.

This dude will be fired by February 15, 2026

It’s hilarious that we destroyed the program bc the coach was paying for top players and now we’re trying to rebuild it by bragging on how much we’re paying for top players.
It’s a Confederacy of Dunces

You gotta love McMahon being hesitant to guarantee LSU is going to make the NCAA in year 4 while Pear is out here guns blazing and telling the pack they’re going to win immediately
McMahon should be apologizing to us for this product. He doesn’t seem to have any shame being fricking terrible

First, glad to see Glen Guilbeau's career is progressing. He's been reduced to Editor of Tiger Rag. Once the stepping stone for journalist to move to bigger roles. Now, the final step before penning articles for the Ville Platte Gazette
$8 million (...according to "sources"). Quite a jump. LSU has 3 HS signees, 4 rising sophomores (at the moment), and an All-SEC junior set to return. That means there are 4 spots available. Given the purported $6M in extra funds LSU should be able to sign some very high dollar transfers, right?

3-15 ain’t average in any universe.

I don't know if I buy a jump from $2m to $8m, but even a jump to $5m would be considerable and help us retain players.

Either his situational awareness is totally fuked up or he is lying his arse off or both

I’m confused. I thought retention wasn’t on the table because this team was devoid of talent.
So are we actually talented? On paper it would suggest so. Why does our product make people want to kill themselves? Watching our offense is way more potent than waterboarding terrorists
