Any thoughts on MSU's run/pass scheme, and what LSU will do defensively?

Watched only highlights of MSU game vs. AZ. MSU had just 14 pts from 3 early turnovers--AZ QB threw 4 INTs--and blew a 14-pt lead. It took overtime for MSU to win, but AZ should have won by 3 scores.

MSU had lots of trap and counter runs, and RBs also broke past the ends at times. Their RB (Marks) leads SEC in rushing so all the barking sportheads keep saying MSU will mostly run. Disagree, given their QB is very experienced and has played and thrown well vs. LSU. MSU still employs similar pass plays as in prior seasons: wheel and crossing routes, quick bubble and delayed screens after misdirection. MSU WRs ran open past AZ's DBs pretty easily b/c the DBs were distracted by multiple receivers and lost their assignments.

My armchair D Coach says: if LSU has a better pass rush with actual pressure and more disciplined DEs (holding their edge vs. over-rushing the QB and/or losing their lane), the DBs not letting WRs past and tackling like they're paid to, and not relying so much on 3-man rush (even in passing sitch's) will go a long way. I'd like to see anything but a slow start.

Also caught past few yrs LSU-MSU.
2020: LINK (another embarrassing 0rgeron loss)

2021: LINK (LSU W but defense, with mostly 3-man rush (can u tell I hate it?) gives up 14 Q4 pts in 6 minutes.

2022: LINK (LSU W, jumps from just 10 to 31 pts in Q4. Malik w/4 third-down catches on Q4 TD drive; Goodwin runs 47 yds up the middle for an icing TD)

11:00 am kickoff on the road vs a three year starter at QB with a very good RB.

This isn’t going to be an easy win....

Arizona did have the 2nd worst P5 defense in the country last year, it should be noted.

I think Coach House is still trying to figure out what his DBs can and can’t do. He made a great adjustment in using trap coverages to take away some of those quick throws Grambling hit early. House will have the D improving each week and it starts with our DBs improving in unseeing the concepts. Coverages are so complicated now. Teams don’t just line up on cover 4 or cover 3 and man. Most zone coverages are pattern matching now and a lot of the man coverages involve brackets. We’ll see how House decides to move forward but he wants to be multiple.

Thanks 4 this. I've been wondering whether the D schemes are too complex or not, esp. given the turnover and new personnel to integrate. Hoping this week we see better tackling and less 3-man rush. I agree that they'll improve.

I'd like to see more Laterrance Welch, plus Sage Ryan stepping up to his ***** rating, but D success starts at the D-Line. Will Rogers is an accurate, experienced QB and I think they'll pass a lot more this week than last. A H Perkins wrecking ball game would be a good restoration of order.

We HAVE to get pressure on Rogers. We need to tackle better. Hopefully, we use Perkins better. Our D will need to play better. Time for our front 7 to step up.

They’re going to pound it on us and coach won’t play Nuss because he throws touchdowns too fast and we’ll need to “control the ball”

Arizona had a ton of WR's running wide open. JD should have a great day Saturday. The Arizona QB made some terrible reads on some of his throws. Some of his interceptions throws were into double coverage and he had wide open receivers that he missed

This is the way.

Our D-Line gets very little push, and our LB corps is suspect. Lets not forget our rotation at DB where we are weakest.

We need an explosive offense to compete until our defense catches up.

Can JD5 be explosive against SEC schools? TBD.

This was the key to the game last season. We started getting pressure in the second half after House made some adjustments and Rogers fell apart. He’s not particularly mobile and that really caused him issues last year. Their offense may be different this year, but this is still the key.

MSU is a very veteran team of Jr's and Sr's. We are going to find out early on. This could be an upset if LSU is not ready and cannot run the ball. MSU is the sleeper in the West. This will be a tough hard fought game till the end. The defense has to get pressure on Rogers or he will kill us. I expect a high scoring game. LSU should win with deeper talent and depth. But MSU is at home and the cowbells will be a menace for sure. If the defense keeps them under 24 we win. If they score 30+ we lose.

MSST needs to be balanced barring them running over the LSU defense, which I'm not counting on.

I'd like to see 30-35 rushes and 20-25 throws. Throw on first and second down sometimes and definitely if it's clear LSU D is gunning for the run.

State has the potential to play a very good game, but they also have the potential to State it up real bad too. Hoping for the best.

It will be an ugly win where we put up 17-24 points of offense, but I would bet our defense plays fairly well since MSU has gone back to a more traditional offense.

I hope we tackle better this game. i'm looking @ season-to-date stats on ESPN...

Top CFB Defenses seem to avg 59%-70% Solo tackles (Solo / Total)

Ohio State - 59.3% (70/118)
Memphis - 63.2% (72/114)
Air Force - 65.7% (65/99)

Meanwhile, LSU's D is 36.6% (52/142)

2 things to notice... it takes 2 or more defenders to make a tackle 63% of the time and we are playing 30-50% more snaps on defense than the top defenses; so, our defense is struggling to get off the field on 3rd downs.

Keys on D for this game:
Pressure on the QB Rogers
Tackle better
Get stops / off the field on 3rd Down

Their philosophy is different than the previous years. They will throw it more than the 17 times they threw it against Arizona but they are still not going to have a pass happy approach. They want to run the ball and will run the ball to control the clock. Stopping their run game is the key to the game here. And we have struggled to do so consistently the first two weeks.
