Because we dont have the qb that we had that season. Etling was a better qb than Brennan has shown himself to be thus far. It all starts with Brennan, he's supposed to be the leader of the damn team. He has to step up big-time bc last Saturday was pathetic qb play. The worst qb play since some of brandon harris' piss poor games.

Nothing like drawing broad sweeping conclusions about how the season will play out after one game
Everyone makes predictions pre-season so why would we not after one game?

Why not do 2017?
Could have. But we don’t have a first-year coach. If I was predicting we lose the Vandy like we lost to Troy then that would make more sense.

No it won’t. The coaching staff has committed to the passing attack philosophy. We will not go back. The only way through is to continue and not get sentimental. No reason to change identities because one person can’t move the chains or extend drives. The play calling against MSU was pretty damn good and the open WRs provide evidence of such. We failed to execute. Our motto is next man up, time to live it.

Yea I guess that's the point. Players stepped up in 2014, and we found what we did well to salvage the season.

I would agree with that.

But after improving all the way through the Alabama game, the whole season fell back into disarray with the Arkansas collapse the following week. That Bert squad was much better than the record indicated, as they lost several one score games before that, including Bama, and went on to shut out #8 Ole Miss 30-0 the following week as well. But that loss was treated as a disaster and really unsettled a lot of people after another loss to Bama.

If we improve a bit then come out of Bama 3-4 or hopefully 4-3 or better, a similar unexpected collapse against A&M or Ole Miss (Ark isn’t there this year), will make things similarly uncomfortable for everyone.

This team needs to win the games it should, and be competitive in the losses going forward or it will start to feel like maybe the overall long term state of the program isn’t really that different than it was five years ago and last season will seem more like an anomaly.

Correlation? Causation? None of the above?

If you go back through the last 20 years of history I think most would say the "worst" LSU (regular) seasons during that time period:

2002 - 8-4
2008 - 7-5
2014 - 8-4
2016 - 8-4

In the years 2000 and 2012. LSU had some of it's lowest ranked recruiting classes of the two decades. Two years later (2002 and 2014) they had a "down" year. The 2006 class wasn't ranked poorly (relatively speaking) but going through the names in that class reveal very few guys who were impact players at LSU. The 2016 season is the outlier because the 2014 recruiting class was great

To that end, the 2018 class was one of the lowest ranked recruiting classes in 20 years. Looking at the names, you see a few big time performers to date (Chase, Marshall, Damien Lewis), but not a lot of guys who have done much else (to date)

Obviously, the 2020 season is both very strange and very young (right now). Thus, there is plenty of time for this team to get much better following the opening loss. But, if this team is on the 2014 trajectory as opined by the OP, could the lack of significant contributors in from the 2018 class be the reason such a drop-off was inevitable?

They can’t change the whole offense, but you can give it to your big backs and help the defense out. Should have done it in the 1st Q last week. Instead we were throwing the ball on 1st down with State running a 6 man front.

Surely you’ll bet on these results accordingly and you aren’t just talking out of your arse

Yeah, 3rd and chavis didn't have our defense ready to play that bowl game. However, we did get hosed on a fake fg that should have been a td and got screwed a few more times in that game which would have changed the outcome no doubt.

I think We’re better than 2014.

We’ll see how the conference as a whole is.

Yeah everyone looked pretty mediocre at least from the box scores. All of our upcoming opponents have quality games this week so we should find out a lot more soon.

2014 was a really good year in the west

Alabama went 12-2
Miss State was 10-3
Ole Miss was 9-5
Auburn was 8-5 but returned a good amount from that 2013 team.

Everyone in the west had a winning record.

That was the worst team of the Miles era. As big of a shite show as Saturday was, it would be an insult to compare these guys to 2014.

I'm assuming ugly wins vs. Vandy and Missouri. Then get embarrassed by the first good team we play (Florida this year, Auburn in 2014).

What makes you think Miss State isn't a good team? Their offense is going to put up some points and they are led by Stanford's former starting QB that is great at the RPO and has 25 starts

The first SEC coach that has his defense ready to play zone will shut them down. And they’ll probably lose to some team they are favored against. It’s Leach’s hallmark.
