This was a fantastic football season. Despit the defense.

I don’t subscribe to the idea that any season that doesn’t end in a championship is a failure. We have won 4 NCs in over 100 seasons. I refuse to accept that all other ones were failures. It just underscores just how hard it is to win one. EVERYTHING has to come together just right. We had a terrible defense, but had the 2nd best offense in LSU history. And our QB won the Heisman. Our 3rd. So winning the Heisman is rarer than winning the NC. And I would argue it’s the 2nd best accomplishment a team can win (it’s an individual award technically, but you can’t win it without a great supporting cast). I think it’s more important than making the playoffs and losing the NCG relative to future team success. LSU will parlay Jayden’s Heisman infinitely more than TCU will their runner-up from last year.

Granted, the defense was atrocious and hard to watch, but it’s not as easy as “if we just had an average defense, we would have made the playoffs.” Because the 2 rarely come together at the same time. Which again, makes winning the NC even more special. Bama has warped our perceptions on just how difficult it is. And it a lot like our ‘05, ‘06, ‘09-‘12 seasons, just opposite when we had great defenses, but not complimentary enough offenses. (‘06 and Jamarcus were great, but they laid 2 eggs on the road).

But more importantly, the older I get, the clearer it is that we only have so many revolutions around the sun. We have a finite amount of LSU football seasons, and every year they seem to go by faster and faster. I’m too old to “waste” any of them just because we didn’t wind up hosting the big trophy at the end. I don’t get to hoist it anyway. I don’t get a ring. All I get is the journey. And Jayden and company gave us a hell of an entertaining one this year. And that’s what I’ll choose to focus on and remember very fondly. I’m in my mid 40s, have been a die-hard for over 35 seasons. And this was one was in my top 5-6, despite the terrible defense. It was certainly frustrating at times, but it was a fun fricking ride. Tip of the cap to the players and coaches who made it happen.

The offense and Jayden winning the Heisman were great but honestly I think I enjoyed last season more. That three game stretch of UF-OM-Bama with the realization that we were about to win the west out of nowhere after upsetting Bama was insane and I will never forget it.

Agreed. Well said.

It’s fun to think what might have been had the defense been average. But oh well.

Still a successful season.

Top 10 season for me. Jayden, his receivers, & the O-Line made it special.

The defense made it special as well, but not in a good way.

Trust in Brian Kelly,

We may not win a national title in first five years. Its really hard to do.

But you’re seeing professionalism during hiccups. It’s what I like to see.

I couldn’t have said it better myself! I am a little older than you and I have sat through enough truly shitty seasons to know that if you have a chance for a 10-win season, that is a truly great season.

Exactly. And while the 12 team playoff makes it easier to actually be in the playoffs (duh), it makes it a lot harder to win. Key for the next five years is to make the playoffs each and every year barring something unforeseen such as a QB1 going down early.

I know they won’t, but I hope our fans understand this. It’s a completely different world now, and winning the NC is about to become much harder. I hope the fans are sensible enough to not hold Kelly to the same standard as Saban, Les, and O relative to winning one in their 1st 3 years. Like you said, the key is just getting there consistently, and eventually the stars will align. Hopefully multiple times, but nothing guaranteed. Anything can happen with 3 rounds of playoffs.

so, in your opinion, 9-3 regular season (plus a win in a mid-tier bowl) is a "great" season???

Sorry, but that's nowhere close to a great season.

I'll remember this season as a massive waste of an exceptional offense. With even a mediocre defense, we'd be in the playoff.

But you go ahead and celebrate this great season.

It wasn’t my favorite team because every game I was worried would end up like Ole Miss and we lose because they score every possession.

OP…well stated but you’re way to young to be counting trips around the sun. For us old guys, the seasons are getting shorter! But this was a fun one
