I think it is quite funny. People will go 20-30 years looking at something and not think about being racist at all. Then one day they figure out it has some sort of tie to the Confederacy and demand it's removal.

It is incredibly insulting for any African American to have to attend to a school that honors confederate militantism.

The rationale is that the Tigers name came from the Louisiana Tigers the name of a regiment from Louisiana that fought for the Confederacy. While that may be true, the mascot is not a confederate soldier, it is a Bengal tiger. Strange times that we live in.

I guess Guice and countless other AA players from LSU will need to cover up their Tiger tattoos.
Also, I think it's ok as long as you say Tigas and not Tigers.

Why would you even bring attention to this?
It wasn't even a story until this post.

Exactly. The less attention that is brought to it, the quicker it will be forgot about. Just let it die. Snowflakes have a short memory.

Playing under that Tiger Mascot has allowed quite a few young black men to realize their dreams and find wealth and fame
The real problem is that there are people out there whose lives are so small and jaded that things like this become their concern.
It really sucks that people treated black people so horribly. Most well meaning white people have at least some disdain for that era.
The absolute fact of the matter is that the Tiger as LSU's mascot has earned its own history. It's a proud history that has ignited love and passion in a million fans, alumni, students, etc. Why rob them of all that joy just because it's tainted for you? Find another school. Find another team whose name doesn't insult you to be involved with.
I mean, while we're at it, we're going to have to change almost every school mascot because someone out there with his powerful keyboard is offended by them.
Hell, don't we need to start with all the schools named after devils and demons. Aren't they responsible for all the bad stuff that's ever happened? What about knights, Spartans, and Trojans: all very violent groups? What about bears, they maul people every year?
I was bitten by a huge chow when I was 8 and it left scars in my leg. Should I petition that all dog mascots be banned?
Where do we draw the line? This is the biggest problem I have with the statues in NO being tore down. I could GAF about the statues. It's that actions like that gives these other idiots courage to champion their nonsense.

This is almost certainly a conservative poli board poster (or someone else pissed off about the monuments in New Orleans) trolling or trying to drum up "anti-SJW" sentiment.
Ignore it. And if anyone ever does seriously question the name "Tigers", you'll be a lot more effective if you stay calm and point out that "Tigers" has been the nickname for Louisiana regiments starting long before and lasting long after the civil war. If you flip your shite and say, "frick you the civil war wasn't about slavery you sjw bitch!" youll only be making their point for them.

Funny, this was said about the statues.
Keep putting your head in the sand. This type of shite will not go away. People like you are letting it happen. It starts off with little things. This type of stuff will continue to get worse.

this is nonsense. Where does it all end? Should we also change the name of "Louisiana" because King Louis was a bad guy that authorized slavery in the French colonies?
What about Washington, DC? Ole George owned slaves - time for a name change?
Maybe we could just follow the lead of Stanford and Dartmouth and just pick our favorite color.
The really sad part of all this is that even if we could magically change the name of every "offensive" city, mascot, school, town, etc., it wouldn't make ONE SINGLE BIT OF DIFFERENCE in the lives of anybody. People would still be offended about something else, and just move on to their next "cause."

It actually didnt. Just inadvertently got referenced that way in speech because of the recent war.
The original idea of tigers came from popular universities like yale and princeton using ferocious animals. And that a tiger resembled the purple and gold colors used by the team.

Just signed it, thanks. Didn't know this existed.

You're falling for a troll. Just don't feed it.
Besides, this would be so easy for LSU to handle. Here's all LSU needs to say:
"It is true that in the early days of LSU football, the team was named "Tigers" to commemorate Louisiana's soldiers of the Civil War. But in the 125 years that followed, the LSU sports teams and its fans have aligned their spirit with that of one of nature's most inspiring creatures, the Tiger, physically powerful, regal, and fierce. This is reflected by our athletics program's consistent use of Tiger imagery, markings, and branding over the course of more than a century. As a modern university that embraces all people, we invite the world to share in our Tiger Spirit. What matters more than the origin of our mascot is the modern meaning of our shared identity, which has evolved into one of courage and excellence. Each and every student, alumnus, and friend of LSU is a Tiger, no matter when, where, or how they came to us. As the flagship university of Louisiana, we accept everyone into our community."
