Gilbert was the closer. These are the situations he is brought in to pitch. It didnt workout. That simple.

You can blame PM for hiring gibbs, but not for the pitching choices today. Irrational hate on this board
Yeah, it seems like alot of shite is not working out. Starter could have gone another inning and Newman would have won this game.

Mainieri put Gilbert in a bad position, and Gilbert should have been able to record 3 outs without giving up 3 runs to get us out with a W. Both guys are to blame

How did PM put Gilbert in a bad situation? He comes in in a normal closing scenario, to start an inning with a lead and not have to bail a prior pitcher out with inherited runners, etc. He is in position for a save with a 3 run lead. Gilbert should have made better pitches, period. The pitcher needs to get it done in that scenario. The 4 f'n hits out of LSU is the real problem, paired with the Thursday night lack of hitting.

Coaches don't make decisions on hindsight....They make decisions based on what's worked in the past.

Because he's coming off of an injury. If Hunter reinjured himself today, you all would have blamed PM for not going to Caleb.
Again, if you watch the game he threw 10 pitches!

I surprisingly don't blame Paul's bullpen management for this.

This team had four hits against a shite pitcher. Thanks Paul for promoting Gibbs.

You don't know that, Newman needed a double play to get out of the prior innining. He may not of had success in the 9th anymore than Gilbert.

Agreed, GT23. This wasn't a bullpen mistake at all.

This...I don't see how you can blame anything on pitching this year (maybe if anything be a little disappointed with Lange). I think the bullpen has been about what we expected not great but good enough to get by most games. The hitting was supposed to be elite....Gibbs and Molinari broke that.

I mean we used our two best arms out of the pen and neither looked good. But still, we can't hit for shite.

We will never know. Just keep falling in the rankings.

Putting him in with the bases clear and a 3 run lead needing just 3 outs to win is a "bad position"?

You know it's bad when I've got to defend PM after a loss. These people make me hate myself.

ETA: All kidding aside, that was one of the most painful games I've ever been to at the Box. It was like watching a train wreck. I knew bad things were about to happen but I just couldn't look away.

Right. And if he hurts himself on pitch 11, you'd be bitching,

You just can't blame CPM for Gilbert's bad outing. Nobody's complaining if he closes it out. CPM deserves a lot of his criticism on this board just not this.

Don't be dumb....With a 3 run lead you always bring in your shut down closer in the 9th every single time.

Yea he had a rough night and blew a save but it was 100% the right move to bring him in.

Maineri makes a lot of horrid decisions but this wasn't one. This loss isn't on him.....Our closer had a bad night and that happens to all closers.

Our closer struck out the side in the eighth and was pulled after the inning.

Especially against a Sunday starter. This is the real problem.

Gilbert blew it, but the offense is yet again looking bad at the plate... the guy barely threw 90 pitches, compared to his last outing.

The strategy, if there is one, is severely lacking.
