I think the staff is better than the performances we have seen throughout SEC play.

My theory, they will be better in Regionals when they get away from the evaluation of the SEC umpires. The regional umpires will call strikes and batters will have to protect on close pitches.

LSU pitchers have thrown good pitches on the corners and batters learned the umps this season as much as they learn the pitchers.

LoL at the bad spelher

One can only hope and, also, that’s why we play the games.

UMPs everywhere are calling tight zones. If you're leaning on a change of scenery from umpires to help our pitching staff... good luck

that's been an issue. no matter the strike zone, we have not thrown a high % of competitively close pitches.

Oof.

You spelled this so bad, you can't even lie and say it was a typo.

If they spell REGIONAL like that we aren’t going anywhere.

Do you have the stats on BB/9 from other conferences to support that position?

While I hope your are correct, I saw a lot of balls that would take a completely blind or paid off ump to call a strike.

I think the path to better pitching is time and a couple of guys continuing to get healthier and last longer.

Most of our bullpen can’t throw competitive pitches. If I was any team I would just sit fastball and refuse to swing at anything else.

I don't feel like starting another thread to address this, but it really seems to me like Sammy Dutton has the capability of being one of those short stint relievers you bring in to generate a ground ball and hopefully turn two if needed.

Except that we don't position our defenders worth a shite to capitalize on the times he does generate weak ground balls.

We do some questionable things.

Sunday v State
Top of 10
Runners on first and third with one out. RHed batter and the shift is on.
Dugas behind second base had to turn two abd not the SS

It was mentioned by someone whose handle I can't remember in the game thread last night that trying to shift in college is a fool's errand because spray charts are based on such small sample sizes. And that's correct and by itself a good enough reason not to do it.

But then when you also combine the fact that the fielders don't have extensive experience fielding and throwing to bases in the shift, along with the pitchers not being able to execute the pitches that the shift metrics would call for it's wholly unreasonable to continue to employ the strategy.

I agree, we use the shift way too often.

Besides, if you make an honest assessment of our infielders only Thompson has average talent. White and Jones are below average and Dugas is hurt. We lack range and athleticism.

our pitchers are walking batters on 4 straight pitches that are not close to being strikes.

Let’s assume your theory is accurate, which I have thought abou, as well. The flip side of that coin is that batters will have to adjust to a slightly larger strike zone, also. Will we see more strikeouts? Who will adjust better and faster?

sounds like an over the counter i need to take when watching our bullpen. take 2 reginol's, a handle of bourbon, and sit back and watch.
