The sport we love is falling apart in front of our eyes

College Football has gotten so far off track it's insane.
Conferences keep growing, now possibly adding schools like UNC and Virginia.
The playoff is moving to 24 teams. So even if you went through a gauntlet and somehow came out on top, a team that lost 4 games that year can still take you out in the playoffs.
Conference championship games are likely on the way out. I hate this, a lot.
Almost entire rosters go into free agency every offseason. It's becoming less and less about development / playing to win and almost all about the bag.
Unfortunately I Iove sports, especially college football. So I'll keep watching. But literally everything that's transpired in the last few years, makes me hate the setup that much more.
I do wonder if a change will come in the future that actually makes me finally say, you know what, I'm good without cfb anymore.

It already fell apart with pay to play.
The sport is way over its skis and lets everything be dictated by TV contract money and now private equity.

I wrote off the nfl and do not even pay attention to any of the games. It’s possible to lose interest

Yep, that's why it doesn't even feel the same watching the game. I am not nearly invested in following the team like I was 5-10 years ago.

It is not sustainable currently. There will need to be massive changes. It is possible that they will lose too much of the fanbase if they wait much longer. It definitely doesnt mean as much to older people any.ore, for the most part. The young people just dont know better yet.

Fell apart*
NIL and transfer portal, unlimited eligibility
Playoffs hurt too.

Until they cancel LSU football altogether, nothing is falling apart.
“Boohoo…LSU has an easier path to a title.”
Suck it up, buttercup,

hopefuly they pass the college sports bill and only allow the one time transfer
the NIL will have to go up to ensure college players are willing to play more football games with the risk of injury

Downstream effect of pay for play

I think of something like #3 Indiana almost losing to Northwestern a few weeks ago. I am not a fan of either team, but I was locked into that game, Indiana losing would almost be a death knell for them and would have massive implications on their playoff chances. Now? It would hardly mean anything outside of a slightly more difficult post season schedule, and even then they'd get another mulligan on top of that.
Everyone will still watch their own teams, but interest in other games will decline.
Or let's saw Auburn and Alabama each have 2 losses one year and are playing each other last game in the Iron Bowl. Everyone is tuned into that. Loser is OUT of the playoffs. Now? It literally doesn't matter. They are virtually playing for a #13 seed and loser will get a #20 seed or something. Just unreal.

Honestly 24 playoffs are better than 12 plus decimated bowls
24 might not be enough - you further erode bowl games, but you are going from 60 something teams in post season to 24

All it would take is a one year boycott from all the fans, and they’d have to fix it
Of course, will never happen

I think if nothing else we're gonna see regular season attendance shrink and viewership drop across the country.
When every game means less, fans will treat it that way.

You wanna really freak out? Go look at how many playoffs we still would've missed with a 24 team playoff.

Screw that...pay them more? Thats already the problem. You arent very bright.

The problem is there is nobody who can actually govern college athletics anymore without being sued. Civil rights attorneys will almost certainly take action against anything that is not in the favor of the athletes.

Thank the dems for putting out a program that has no boundaries. These people currently supplying the $$...they didnt get wealthy by giving $$ away. This was put in by the dems to expedite wealth redistribution. Problem is they didnt thi k it through, like normal.

sucks but then you realize how insignificant sports are compared to going and living your life. I use to never leave the house on the weekends. Now, I couldn't tell you anything about the NFL these days.
CFB is not far behind.
