Eddie Nunez is "supposed" to be figuring big in the search. Well... he played for and coached with Billy Donovan at Florida. He can't even fricking pick up the phone and make a call to his old coach/boss?
Hannagriff is speculating that Nunez WILL call Donovan. To pick his brain re: suggestions for a replacement.

I'm all for making He and others say no. Now having said that we have to be willing to pay what it would take otherwise it would just be hollow posturing. Like Bama did with Greg Marshall. They made him say no and it was a serious offer not just window dressing to appease the masses.
Now there will be A LOT of folks who will say we can't pay the basketball coach more than the football coach. Absolute loser mentality and I hope that's not what prevents us from getting someone of substance who might come here if you do.

Alleva can swing for all the big name coaches he wants but must not end up with one-of-us type coach or the JJ issue would start over again. We need a new direction in basketball under a big name coach or a young, hungry, up and coming coach.

Seriously, why would you not? Assuming you are willing to pay big money (not necessarily a safe assumption with the dildos running show at LSU) why would you not at least try to talk to someone who could change the landscape of your program and college basketball for several years. Here's the list of current NCAA/NBA coaches with 4 Final Four appearances and 2 national championships on their resume:
Coach K
Roy Williams
Billy Donovan
That's it!
LSU has some big selling points as a program.
1. Member of the most lucrative college conf. in America and one Donovan is very familiar with.
2. Facilities that are very much on par with his last college job and money to upgrade if necessary
3. A fairly rich talent pool with no in state competition. shite, Baton Rouge alone produces some great players. Donovan was part of a Final Four that featured an LSU team whose starting line up consisted COMPLETELY of Louisiana players, 80% of them being from the BR area. Hell, even blue bloods like Duke, UNC, UK, Indiana, would have a very hard time making the Final Four with just local kids.
4. Familiarity with a member of the athletic dept. (Nunez)
The timing may never be better to at least take a shot! The worst he could say is no. Then Alleva could just hire whatever mediocre bum he has his sights on. But damn man, give it a shot! You're never going to get to bang Margot Robbie if don't at least fricking try

Whole lot easier to return to college when you're having nothing but losing seasons in the pros.
Billy Donovan got to the conference finals his first year and is going to be back in the playoffs again in his 2nd year.

Why has Bill self at Kansas not been mentioned?

Because he isn't realistically attainable. He makes almost $4 million a year and has won the Big 12 regular season title 14 years in a row at Kansas. Why would he leave what he's got at Kansas to take over a dumpster fire at a school where basketball plays 3rd fiddle behind both football and baseball.

There should be a very short lists of unattainables. Then make a list and work down. Make them tell you no

Wouldn't call leaving really bad losing NBA/NFL coaching performances to blue blood programs as similar to Donovan leaving a playoff team for LSU

Cal was only a NBA assistant when he left and settled for a solid Memphis program only because of lingering NCAA infraction history

LSU basketball is in far better shape now than it was when Donovan went to Florida. There is a base of young talent and great tradition. If Donovan wants to return to the college game this would be a great place to land.

Go get Bobby Knight out of retirement.

And the roster has been turned over significantly from year one to year 2. I mean maybe you think OKC is more of a contender with Greg McDermott at F than with Kevin Durant, but I don't. They are trending in the wrong direction without Durant on the roster any more. They're on pace to win 10+ games less than they did a year ago and get bounced from the playoffs in the first round.
I'm sure when Donovan took the job the big draw was the opportunity to coach a team who had two of the top 10 players in the NBA on the roster. Now it's a bit of a rebuild job around Westbrook. He only has two years remaining on his contract after this season, so by the type you get it rebuilt close to a championship contender he may be out the door like Durant.
Donovan entered a situation where the team was ready to win big immediately. Now he's in a situation where it's probably going to take (at least) a few years to get to that point, if ever with Westbrook on the team.
No LSU doesn't have the pedigree of UK or Louisville basketball, but those jobs aren't open. LSU could, however, offer Donovan a lucrative situation where he could win big again (if he could win at UF, a place with virtually zero basketball tradition before he got there, he could win at LSU)
Likely? No
But so far fetched that you don't even explore the possibility? Absolutely not

It would cost a fortune to acquire Donovan or a similar big name coach for service and probably more than what they pay for O. Alleva and company are not ready and will not be so to land a big name coach in bskb. In the end we may end up with a young, up and coming coach from a bskb school.

Right, and if not him, maybe Phil Jackson or Pat Riley. Is Red Auerbach still alive? If so, let's hire him. Or even if he's dead.
