The “Most Expensive Roster” Narrative Is Getting Old

I am so sick and tired of the same played-out, uninformed commentary about the cost of this roster. It’s one of the laziest, most disingenuous takes being thrown around right now, and people keep repeating it like it’s some groundbreaking analysis.
Kiffin had roughly a MONTH to come in and clean up the dumpster fire Brian Kelly left behind. A MONTH to retain critical pieces like Pickett and Green. A month to keep high school commitments from falling apart, including Lamar Brown and Richard Anderson. A month to lock down Deuce Geralds. And then somehow convince legitimate talent to come join a program that was in complete disarray.
You think that comes cheap? You think players and their agents weren’t fully aware of the leverage they had? LSU wasn’t negotiating from a position of strength. They were trying to stabilize a roster, retain foundational talent, and rebuild an entire program on an accelerated timeline. That costs money. It’s called supply and demand.
And please, spare me the outrage over LSU spending money while pretending Ole Miss, Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, and Alabama are assembling their rosters from the clearance aisle at Dollar General.
The difference is those programs have had CONSISTENCY. They’ve had established systems, roster continuity, years of recruiting, and player development. They weren’t forced to rebuild and retain an entire roster in a matter of weeks while everyone else knew they were desperate.
The reason LSU’s roster was reportedly so expensive is because it HAD to be. That’s not some indictment of Kiffin. It’s the reality of the situation he inherited.
And here’s another thing: NONE OF YOU KNOW WHAT THIS ROSTER ACTUALLY COST.
First it was $40 million. Then over $40 million. Then $50 million. Then over $50 million. The number changes every time somebody needs another headline or talking point. Nobody outside the people actually writing the checks knows the full financial picture. But because it’s Lane Kiffin and LSU, the media knows exactly how to generate clicks, and half this fan base eats it up without exercising an ounce of critical thinking.
Should this team be playing better? ABSOLUTELY. There are legitimate criticisms to be made about execution, coaching decisions, development, and what we’re seeing on Saturdays. Nobody is suggesting Kiffin gets a free pass because of the circumstances.
But stop acting like LSU rolled out Jeremiah Smith, Trinidad Chambliss, and an established national championship roster and somehow can’t figure out how to win football games. Spending a lot of money to assemble a roster in an emergency doesn’t magically make it the most talented, cohesive, or developed roster in the country.
Roster cost and roster quality are NOT interchangeable. Especially when one program is paying a premium to overcome years of mismanagement while others are building on established foundations.
And finally, IT’S NOT YOUR MONEY.
Clearly, the people funding this program have serious money and have made the decision to invest in LSU football. Not just Lane Kiffin’s first season. THE PROGRAM. They’re putting their money behind building something sustainable, and thank God they are.
Criticize the product on the field all you want. I certainly will. But at least have enough understanding of the situation to separate legitimate football criticism from lazy, recycled media narratives.
Some of y’all are so obsessed with the price tag that you’ve completely stopped thinking about what LSU was actually paying for.

I was watching the two guys on the SEC channel the day after the game and they had our roster at 50 million and Lane’s salary at 150 million! They simply keep inflating the numbers to be hyperbolic

Also what nobody is stating is that nobody knows the terms of these deals.
There are for certain 2 year deals included in that number.
We most definitely did not sign everyone on 1 year deals for 40 or 50MM.
We aren’t that dumb but that doesn’t stop the fake news or sensationalists

I will agree he had no QBs left and there weren’t exactly great choices to get. I believe he got the best available but he was always going to need time to recover from injury and then gel with the team.
Imagine if LSU put all their resources into Sorsby.
I don’t normally believe in giving it time, but I kind of understand it here. I just really regret not winning the Kentucky game, because they had opportunities to end the end with a win.

Agreed, the lowest iq people are screaming about roster spend.
Reasonable people realize that bringing 50 people replacing entire rooms due to the past staffs incompetence know it will cost more to fill that. They also know no one is seriously contending for a title without being in the top 15 spending. There is a price to success.

I'm not reading all that.
The excuses for Kiffin are already getting old and we're only halfway through his first season.
I'll just say that you don't spend $50 million on a roster to not make the playoffs. I guarantee you the people who helped buy that roster did so with the intention on LSU making the playoffs this year. Luckily, I didn't because as of right now, it's looking like a terrible ROI.
And before the season, nearly everyone here said they expected LSU to be in the playoff. Now that it's looking unlikely, everyone here is moving the goalposts and coming up with every excuse for Kiffin. It's a little ridiculous IMO.
I'm not closing the book on Kiffin, but the fact of the matter is that up to this point of the season, it's been a failure. Kentucky will probably be in the playoff this year and they also have first year head coach, a roster that cost less than half of ours, a worse program than ours, etc etc.
It's ok to call it what it is at this point - a failure of a season (if they don't run the table and make the playoff) and a waste of $50 million. But as you mentioned, it's not my money so the price tag doesn't concern me. As a fan, the results do and they haven't been good so far.

I guarantee behind the scenes Lane already has a big board of dudes he plans to reach out to when the portal opens. Players will be scouted more thoroughly and due to the previous class being full of multi year guys, Lane will have the luxury of being more selective on who to take and we will end up in a much better spot next season roster wise.
People just need to relax and trust the process.

Just curious, do you think next year's roster will cost more or less than this year ?

You sir, and/or madame, are the epitome of the original post. There was a description of the stupid things people say on here, and you decided to volunteer to be the shining example.
Well played

I think it will be less. Kiffen has even hinted at this in a couple of comments he made. If you retain the players you want then you don't need as many and you can be more selective. I think it's one of the reasons they are willing to let FL outbid them for Royal. they just aren't going to pay $1.6 million for a HS player that has never taken a snap in College. As much as I want to make the playoffs this year I am more concerned with the program and the future. That part i'm not worried about.
