remind me. what year was it we we were up on okie state in a CWS and had a rain delay? when we came back we lost? I think it was mid 90s.

it musta been a year we were eliminated and did not win it all. I looked up all our natty years and we never faced okie state those title years.

Had to be either 1987 or 1990. We’ve played Okie State three times there, all in those two CWS and lost all three games. I have little recollection of that. I started at LSU in the fall of 1987 (after the 1987 CWS), and I didn’t really start following closely til that year, so I remember the 1989 run pretty well.

Tigers winning aside, this was the best baseball game at any level I have ever watched. The pitching, Tre Morgan’s scoop and save, and Tommy Tanks (as you mentioned).

That was a college baseball masterpiece.

I was listening to LSU play on the radio outside of New Orleans for shot heard around the world. I was heading to the city for a meeting and remembered pulling over in Slidell to listen to the comeback . It’s was unreal

Was that the game where we hit a home run to tie the score and as soon as the ball cleared the fence they cut over to an Orioles game? There was almost a riot at the Boot.

Post of the year!

‘91 team was when I was sucked in to LSU baseball. My uncle who taught me the game would take us from time to time to the Box. One of his best friends was on that team.

Face Oregon St in Game 2 of the regional, enter the bottom of the 8th tied, score 1 run to win the game 6-5.

Lose to Wake in Game 2 at Omaha. Come back from the loser's bracket to an elimination game versus Wake Forest. Greatest pitched game by both teams in the history of the CWS to get to Tanks 2-run shot to win in the bottom of the 11th 2-0. Face Florida in the title series. In Game 1, LSU homers in the top of the 8th to tie the game (Tanks again). Beloso homers in the top of the 11th and LSU holds on to win 4-3. In Game 2, LSU gets blown out in the most runs scored against in the history of Omaha (or something like that). Game 3-LSU blows out UF.

That series with UF needs a 30/30 on it just to cover the emotional swings.

I'd forgotten how much of a pain in the arse South Alabama was, at times, in the 90's. That was also pre-TV days (as crazy as it sounds), so you lived and died with the radio broadcast for baseball more than any other major sport.

Also, it's hard to imagine a more tension filled run than the 2023 CWS. The regional/SR was cake. But it was incredible to watch 6 nerve racking games in 8 days (opener vs. Tenn, Wake #1, Tenn. #2, Wake #2, Wake #3, Florida #1). The last two games were the most anti-climatic. Both good and bad

That was one of the strongest fields ever. Three all timer teams in Wake, UF and LSU and Tenner one year away from a title. Remember when Oral Roberts gave UF fits?

Lose Game 3 of the Regional to South Alabama, next game elimination game against, who else, Long Beach, who takes a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the 7th, we tie it in the top of the 8th, then go to extra innings, which we win by scoring 7 in the top of the 11th to win 14-7. We then breezed through two wins against South Alabama to reach Omaha.

I just wanted to add this nugget to the 97 title that has always stuck with me. Bama beat us 2 out of 3 in Tuscaloosa that year. And they hammered us 12-2 in the SEC Tourney title game. I remember reading a bunch of smack talking from them about that leading up to Omaha. But alas, we got our revenge by beating them 13-6 in the title game.

Good call. Also, the year before, in 1996, the Gators swept us in the regular season and beat us in the SEC tournament. Then, we proceeded to sweep them (AGAIN - like in 1991) in the CWS on our way to the greatest game in CWS history (or 1A with 1B being LSU v Wake in 2023).

Other than leaving out the super regional info in 2000, 2009, 2023 and 25, it was a very good post.

The only reason I’m bringing up the Super Regionals is because I forgot who LSU played in the Supers in 2000 and 2009. I want to say it was Rice in 09 but could be wrong.

Oh damn! And how could I forget this about the 97 title. Not only did we break (and still hold) the HR record for a single season in the history of college baseball, but LSU homered in EVERY game that year, including the post season. That's amazing. Larson had 40. I think we had something like 5 players with double digit homers, maybe 6.

Then, of course, in Omaha, the shot heard round the world in the 50th anniversary edition of the CWS. Other than that little thing, the CWS was pretty uneventful (from a heart attack standpoint).

No mention of the 18 run inning vs. Georgia Tech??

Ehhhh don’t agree with this one. Definitely had better pitching staffs before for starters. We had a bunch of pitchers pitch uncharacteristically lights out in the series to win it
