Looking back, it is like we beat a top 10 Tennessee on the road, and only beat them for the eight time ever (or something). What a kickass game with huge moments.

At the time, it was "are we seriously fricking losing to UT's backup QB. Why is Russell throwing all these picks? Did we just throw a pick six after Miles said we were going to play our asses off? Did Crowton really call a reverse on third and four? Did Big Herm really just go offsides on 4th and 3? Did we really just waste two timeouts on a crucial drive while behind? frick YEAH WE SCORED! WOOOO. TENNESSEE frickING BLOWS!"

I know over the age of 55 still claims there is a picture somewhere that shows Cannon over the line.

See my comment; I'm 71 and saw the photo next morning from the sideline with the ball more than half way across the plane. 2 pt conversion was good. Photo was from a Tennessee newspaper that was in the Beaumont Enterprize Sunday paper (where we saw it). Threw the paper away about 25 yrs ago.

We subsequently played Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl in a non-motivated game after beating Ole Misss on Cannon's 89 yd run. Due to the Tennessee loss and just like Bama in '11, we lost 21-0.

That games most famous photo however is Cannon signing a bonus contract with the Houston Oilers for the initial 1960 season of the AFL for $100K; that was the highest ever for pro football.

It was a fight between the Los Angeles Rams (NFL) and the Houston Oilers (AFL). You should youtube Cannon's highlights for his first three years in the AFL; 1960-62...outstanding despite a second year injury that would eventually lead to his becoming a tight end with the Oakland Raiders.

I think I have this right based on recollection.

I went to the Sep 2001 game it sucked. But we got them back in the SEC championship that year and won the sugar bowl.

It's probably the most underrated regular season win in LSU football history.

It was Miles' second year. He'd already pissed off a significant portion of the fanbase by being "not Saban" - up to that point, no LSU head football coach - since the first game of the series in 1925 - had faced Tennessee more than once and had a winning record - except Saban.

There had been a tie in Knoxville in 1925 to inaugurate the series. LSU lost the return match in Tiger Stadium in 1926. These were pre-SEC games. The teams would meet again in 1933 for the first year of SEC play. LSU won that game in Tiger Stadium - literally the last time the series has been even since.

Tennessee won 10 straight before Mac "broke" the streak with a fricking tie in 1964. What Bernie Moore and Paul Dietzel failed to do, Mac accomplished in 1964 (the tie) and 1974 (a WIN!). Stovall would tie Tennessee.

So, by the time Saban took over as LSU's head coach - LSU was an impressive 3-18-3 over a 75-year period, including 2 pre-SEC games.

Saban went 2-1 over the Vols the first 2 seasons, the final game sealing LSU's first SEC championship since the shared (with Auburn) 1988 Championship (which is BS, since we won the Earthquake game, but whatever).

Since the "Katrina" loss to Tennessee in 2005 - LSU has won 4 straight to make the series somewhat more respectable at 9-20-3.

For all we know, Cannon surged forward after this picture was taken and crossed the goal line.

See my post. I've tried to locate the sideview shot from the Beaumont Enterprize and Tennessee newspapers and can't find it.

There was a photo dammit.

Didn't he throw 3 picks in that game?

Coincidences amaze me. The '59 game also included three picks thrown by LSU QB's...Rabb and ??...maybe one was by a halfback. Can't remember. One was a pick six.

By the way there is a youtube video of the entire '59 game...if I recall about 40 min long.

Whats amazing is tigers threw two interceptions one a pick six and fumbled twice and still had a chance to beat Vols. I believe a painting of that play hangs at Tennessee and Johnny Majors said stopping cannon one of greatest plays in Vols history.

I was there in 2006. Jamarcus led a great comeback. UT fans were pissed at the bars that night.

That's back before football games became social gatherings for the "casual fan" that only shows up because it's the in thing to do.

I think attending football games has always been a social gathering, but be that as it may, televising every game has a lot more to do with lower attendance than anything else. In the 50's and early 60's one was content if their team had one televised game a year.

High school games such as Jesuit - Holy Cross could draw a crowd of 20 to 30K when there was less in the way of entertainment options.

If anything, I'd argue LSU football games were much more "social gatherings" back in those days than they are now. People used to dress up in their finery to go to games back then. They've pretty much always been the number one social event of Baton Rouge. People who act like it's otherwise, have no idea what they're talking about.

Jamarcus started running more in that game and i think was the key to win. He continued to run more the last game and the bowl game.

Tigers were not underdogs. The line was Tenn(+4) and so the outcome of the game was LSU, push.

Seems like every time we play UT they have some fast as hell receiver who we let get behind us multiple times. Let's not do that.

And not an empty seat. That's my point. That's more impressive to me than a stadium that holds 100k, 85k show up, and about 20k of them leave at halftime.

Here is the 2 pt. play from the 1959 game. Looks like he scored to me. Go to the 26:30 mark of the video.
