The lack of pass rush by the DL really hurt the defense this year.

You can't expect any DB to guard any WRs as QBs sit in the pocket and order extra sauce for their Big Mac while scanning the field for open WRs.

Not only did the LSU DL have the issue of lining up off the ball like this was Canadian football the first 3-4 games but there seemed like there was no creativity on the DL all year long. That is, no stunts or delayed blitzes. It was the most milquetoast DL I have ever seen at LSU and maybe in CFB.

I just don't get how the defensive staff had this defense so unprepared all season long. It seems almost impossible how poorly the LSU defense played to the point that any normal high school defensive coach could have fielded a better defense.

House's scheme was by far the biggest problem with this defense. Big reason why he was fired.

Losing the DL coach and not replacing him with a qualified candidate was a huge detriment this season.

It was an overall poor defense.

No unit complemented each other.

Brian Kelly should have immediately moved Lindsey into an analyst role and hired a full time coach. The slow movement on that front was a killer for the DL. Poor technique, poor motivation, poor effort, poor scheme. None of it was good with a lot of talented guys

I'm just baffled that he seemed to keep doing the same old things over and over. Were any stunts run on the DL? I don't member seeing any.

You are not wrong but I'm of the belief that it starts up front. If the DL never gets a push bad things follow.

they didn't rush the passer and then when they tried to contain the qb they couldn't do that either

if you look at the last three plays against Wisconsin the Dline still looked like a jumbled mess that got lucky

No pass rush AND DB's playing soft coverage, both zone and man. We essentially played prevent defense most of the season. Why? It made no sense.

Some may say the talent on the D-line wasn't there. I disagree. Look at the last defensive series of the bowl game.

LSU lost two NFL DEs from year one to year two and did not replace them

the problems with the defense start there and move outward

It didn't help matters but House's scheme, glaring issue. Refused to pressure the QB and when he did blitz it was a delayed blitz and QB still had time to throw the ball. No stunting. Just bland and vanilla and big reason defensive line does not like House. Defensive players want to attack the ball. House wants read and react and play passive and assignment base. Anything goes wrong, players get the blame.

It certainly didn't help. But the issues went well beyond that. There were very little "stunts", "games", "twist" by the DL. It was basically just a straight on bull rush every play. And if the DTs were blocked initially they essentially gave up on the rush. The defensive gameplan vs Alabama was essentially coaching malpractice. LSU never tried to confuse Milroe (which other teams showed could be done). They half-assed rushed and then decided to NEVER account for the thing the guy does best...run the football.

Michigan is a better team. Obviously a better coached defense. But they confused the hell out of the Alabama OL all first half because their DL was constantly playing games and pressure was coming off the edge from different spots. LSU did NONE of that. LSU's defensive approached seemed to be sit back, be as vanilla as possible, and just hope they were somehow able to get a stop

I’m starting to think tension between the staff and the players might’ve been bigger.

Look, House sucks but he did a substantially better job last year compared to this year.

We lost some players but not enough to warrant that massive, massive drop off.

I think House rubbed everyone the wrong way and probably got worse as the season went on considering the “results” we were getting on the field.

I think House was a cancer in the building and that, mixed with his shitty scheme made for an all time bad year.

Excellent post. Tackling is effort related. Players didn't have much faith in House or his scheme and it clearly showed and thus the low effort.

House's defense last year was barely passable. Wasn't that great as we were all aware of the 3rd and House. But his first year on a rebuild and he made 2nd half adjustments. It was passable and gave us hope as the mantra was wait till House gets his players in the system.

His defense last year wasn't anything great

We couldn't contain off the edges; pushing things back inside. DL turn their shoulders and not staying square to the LOS making huge cutback lanes.

These are pop warner issues, I don't understand how college level players can't do what they have done since the age of 6 all the way through high school without a coach or DC?

I agree with this sentiment and believe the DB's got an unfair shake at times due to this. How many sacks did we have this past year versus previous years (ignoring the final drive for Wisconsin).

Technique and conditioning matter as much as talent. LSU might see a huge improvement with the right DC hire.

And that falls directly in the lap of BK.

29 in 2022 and 31 in 2023.

The only way I can explain these stats is the D played well in spots but when it counted (i.e., 3rd downs) they struggled. I have not checked but probably a lot of stat padding versus inferior talent, like Army and Grambling.
