Prominent orthopedists will tell you that this, and playing the same sport year round is the biggest cause of all these arm issues

starting a game a day earlier than normal is not what I would call overworked. Though he is a redshirt freshmen, he's thrown more innings this year than he's ever thrown before. It's not his elbow like Walker

Hilliard is a true freshman not a redshirt.

I follow LSU baseball, SEC baseball and MLB very closely, and guess what? Pitchers get hurt, they get hurt a lot.

I followed Strasbutg with the Nats very closely. They counted every pitch, the monitored his every move and they even shut him down and didn't pitch him in the playoffs. And guess what? He blew out his elbow anyway despite being pampered like Secretariat.

So now LSU gets a few good pitchers hurt and somehow it becomes the coach doesn't know what he's doing even though pitching injuries are prevalent at all levels!! Go figure.

It was said that Josh Smith had recovered from the stress reaction in his back when he returned for those few games. When he went out again, they said it was muscle aggravation. After that, we never heard anything other than he was being shut down for the year.

I'm not blaming Mainieri at all, since all he can do is rely on what the doctors, trainers and players tell him. Just saying that when he says words like soreness, tightness or fatigue, it's not a clinical diagnosis, and there's no way to tell if it is or isn't serious based on what he says.

Paul needs to quit intrasquad scrimmaging so much in the fall and in the winter before the regular season starts. Freshman pitchers go from their high school senior season to fall baseball at LSU to preseason practice in late January and February, straight into the full 60+ game season. The kids arms never get rest. Meanwhile LSU is playing 5-6 innings of an intrasquad scrimmage every day they are allowed to practice in the offseason.

Do we do this more than other schools do? I honestly have no idea.

No. And actually we do it way less than JUCOs who play like 10 actual games in the fall.

Since a rule change we are now able to play 2 fall games that don't count against the 56.

Josh Smith didn't miss virtually the entire year because of muscle soreness. No one can be dumb enough to believe that's all it was.

I love it when someone who hasn't followed the baseball team all season shows up in the post season and tries to appear knowledgeable about the team.

Yea there is a reason for that. Walker and Hilliard's status update were both muscle fatigue. Then Walker's injury ended up being more serious and required surgery. So let's see if Hilliard goes out there and pitches after his Muscle Fatigue diagnosis. Walker's injury was over looked in the practice game and not taken serious until he couldn't pitch anymore in the CWS.

Holy Moses you are an idiot.

I read your post as you thought it was muscle fatigue the whole time....my bad.

Still though once he was cleared from the stress reaction and tried to come back he kept having muscle spams from being totally inactive for 10 weeks so in this case it actually makes sense.

I agree with you here...I just wouldn't use Josh Smith as the example.

Hilliard only averaged about 40 innings per year in high school. He is now almost double that.

I had read about that a few months back. I’ll be interested to see if we take advantage of that.

Not blaming any players or coaches but LSU baseball has had a shitload of pitchers being injured during the past 5 years or so...and at the most unfortunate times. Seems like every fricking season.

The perception may not be fair and not reality but, it does seem like we lose more than a few pitchers to injury every year. I don't how we compare to other program with arm or shoulder injuries so maybe it's typical.
I am sure Mainieri and Dunn have consulted with others to review if we could do something different regarding training, recovery, rehab etc.
