Why do yall act like Alleva had anything to do with Dukes success? Coach K was winning championships long before that goof stepped foot on campus.

Perhaps, but he was around long enough to get to know people. I don't see Martin and Lombardi hiring a total retard. Maybe they can lean on Skip for some ideas since he hired Miles.

I have felt the same way for a while. CT2 needs to shut his fricking mouth and let LSU hire who they want. If he is ALL LSU like he says, he will support no matter what. But he has this huge ego that he is the sole reason why in state recruits go to LSU. We need a coach that will come in and not give a damn about CT2's agenda.

Sorry.......sarcasm meter is a bit off this morning. Regardless, I hope the next coach tells him to go to hell.

McKay may have some other issues, but this is a great article.

Johnny Jones would just be awful.

great read. Agree the Good Ol Boy Network won't work again for this hire. Jones isn't the answer.

It looks for all the world like a PR blitz designed to create the appearance of a groundswell of support for Jones, who hasn’t been prominent in any coaching searches at other schools over the 11 years he’s been at UNT. Not for open jobs at SMU or TCU, not for open jobs at UTEP or Houston, and not for open jobs at Texas Tech or Texas A&M. And yet LSU, who was paying its coach more than four times Jones’s $273,000 salary at North Texas, is somehow duty-bound to hire him on the recommendation of three forced-out ex-coaches and an AAU promoter?

Very telling part of the story here!

I'm not sure, but didn't he hold the record for Louisiana's biggest baby at birth until Herman Johnson came along?

I shouldn't be messing with the guy, just an old running joke about McKay bankrupting the old Purple and Gold Magazine. Issues not delivered after people paid, etc, etc.

Last I head McKay was trying to help people sell franchises or something.
Good to see he may have found something he is good at.

Exceptionally good article by McKay. His account of the internal political dysfunction at LSU that scuttled the football coaching searches in the 1980's and 1990's is particularly insightful. If LSU returns to its old parochial ways, the long term success of the AD will be jeopardized. LSU must continue to mimic the efficient professionalism of peer institutions like the University of Texas and the University of Florida, hiring coaches and administators on the basis of pedigree and merit, not on the basis of the Bourbon tinged recommendations of backwoods T-Baptiste's who happened to go to high school together (or in this case, a bunch of greasy-palmed street hustlers).

mckay owes me a year or two of p&g mags as well. but i have NEVER gotten more insight and info on the PULSE of LSU athletics than i use to get from his p&g mags-especially his editorials on the first page of p&g.
i don't know the guy (other than calling him a few times when he was at p&g) but i wish he still was LSU sports oriented instead of politically oriented. i for one miss his spot-on insight into LSU

Not sure of the dealings you've had with Scott, but you can't deny the guy is pretty sharp and usually has a pretty good take when it comes to LSU sports.

(His political takes aren't bad either)

Of note:

As for Saban, he commanded enough respect upon his arrival that the supposed political problems preventing success disappeared almost immediately. Within two years of Saban coming to LSU, not only were the problems surrounding landing players from New Orleans solved but LSU began locking out its competitors from the city. Saban also had no trouble getting his signees to campus in sufficient numbers to compete on a high level, and Saban also helped lead a campaign to quickly remedy whatever deficit LSU had where facilities were concerned, including at $20 million Academic Center for Athletes that LSU is still reaping major benefits from.

In other words, once a good coach was hired, all those excuses why his predecessors couldn’t succeed went out the door.

Didnt honor thousands of Purple and Gold Subscriptions and absconded with a lot of peoples money, supposedly. He was reviled in the LSU community after that for a while
