The future is very bright but unfortunately the defense won’t be very good next year

I think offense will continue to hum, but the lack of movement in the portal on defense has me thinking it will be more of the same next year. Will it be good enough for the playoffs? We will see.

I would wait until at least summer to make this statement. Have a feeling a couple solid DT’s will be in the cards as grad transfers.

I'd take "mediocre" over what we had last year.

This. Average would be a drastic improvement.

If we are in the top 75 on defense and our offense plays like it did in the bowl then we will be in contention. It will still be infuriating to watch but we will be contending at least.

There is no way you can make such an extreme statement right now.

The entire defensive coaching staff has been revamped. Is it too crazy to say a lot of the defensive players will get better and take a big step up? Improvement happens all the time in football.

Also rumors of a big time defensive lineman joining ship at some point.

coaching and scheme matter. I watch lots of cfb teams with far less defensive talent play good sound defense during the season.

I think Kelly is banking on a combination of 1) these new hires coaching up the guys we already have, amd 2) an influx of talented freshmen.

I think this defense will show decent improvement next year. They won't be elite, but they will be improved.

You will see a measured, thought out plan to reduce the roster numbers and bring in 1-2 impact defenders for the Spring. IF we have learned anything it is that Kelly doesnt do anything in a hurry nor does he make the same mistakes twice.

solid DT’s

I'm of the opinion that if you are old enough to grad transfer and choose to do that rather than enter yourself into the NFL draft, you're probably not all that great of a player (as of the time you transfer). "Solid" may be accurate, but solid doesn't mean very good. And OP said the defense won't be "very good". Getting a couple of solid DTs will not make us very good.

Even still, it’s way too premature to say for sure

Hell, defenses can change midway through a season. People get too caught up in preseason hype (or lack thereof)

Can we be any worse? My gosh, we weren't in the top 100 in any category. We'll be better for sure. Now if you're talking LSU of old, that's a different story.

They're not going to suddenly go from what they were last year to the 85 Bears in one offseason. But I think you'll still see a lot of improvement. One, because there's no way they can be worse than last year, nowhere to go but up. And two I think the new staff will cater to the strengths and weaknesses of who they have instead of stubbornly trying to run a complicated system that didn't fit the personnel, which I think will put them in better position to have success. Especially going from having no DL coach and having to bring in Jenkins midseason to having 2 of the best DL coaches in the country will make a world of difference.

Did Missouri have a bunch of 4 and 5 star players on their defense the past few years? Wisconsin seems to have good defenses year in and year out with far lower caliber players than LSU. Probably wishful thinking, but maybe Baker can take our current players and mold them into a coherent, cohesive defense. 2024 might be too soon, but maybe not.

Compared to this year’s team the defense is going to look like the ‘85 Bears due to actual coaching and a sane scheme.
