The Don coach who could save LSU basketball

I hope Woodward hires another young up-and-comer like Wade was instead of a more experienced retread coach, as it's unlikely any big name coach in their prime will consider taking this job amidst everything looming.
San Francisco Dons coach Todd Golden is a rising star, and will be a high level Power 5 coach somewhere sooner than later. Only 36, young and hungry looking for something to prove. Huge analytics guru like Wade, big on attention to detail. Got his start and coached under Bruce Pearl. Building a rising program at USF that will make some noise in the tournament. He's already on Missouri's radar:

If Todd Golden’s style of play is reminiscent of one team in particular, that team would be Auburn. Golden’s Dons fly up and down the floor and rank 86th in adjusted tempo. They let ‘em rip behind the arc, sitting 42nd in 3-point attempts rate. They are currently ranked top 50 in offensive FG% thanks in large part to their efficacy inside the arc, covering a 54.2 percent clip that ranks 37th in Division I. They are lethal in transition, averaging 1.19 points per possession. They rely heavily on spot up attempts, shots out of ball screen actions and hand offs. Unlike many modern offenses where outside shots come purely off of catch and shoot opportunities, San Francisco is more than happy for 3-point attempts to come off of pull ups, much like Auburn.
Defensively, the Dons may be even better. They rank 18th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency per Pomeroy. They are extremely effective at preventing three point shots from being attempted. They rank 17th in allowing the fewest 3 point field goals per field goal attempted. This leads to a low volume and low quality of opponents looks from outside. They also do a very good job of cleaning the glass to disallow second chance opportunities.
On a larger scale, Golden prides himself as an analytics nut. This should be of little surprise considering his time spent under Kyle Smith. A recent piece in The Athletic delved into how Golden’s data-driven approach forms his game to game strategy as well as his program strategy. Golden has mined the transfer portal using these strategies to help his program compete with his mentor at St. Mary’s and the elephant in the room, the behemoth in Spokane.

Love everything about this idea for a replacement, and his surname is a cherry on top.

I like him. I think he’s what we need, but unfortunately he’s not in the Woodward mold. SW will want to hire someone nearing retirement. Someone who’s had success but is nearing the twilight years of their career. Hope I’m wrong

Baseball coach Jay Johnson doesn’t fir that mold

Love the idea but probably not geriatric enough for Woodward.
Does Todd have any grandkids yet?

Scott's not going to take a chance on an unknown.
The fan base was too happy with Will, if he hires and unknown snd the guy starts losing or god forbid if Wade goes somewhere else snd starts winning big like Bruce Pearl and we regress then the fanbase is going to become brutal.
Football is going to take some time to rebuild.
Baseball is good this year but the lack of a staff could easily keep them from Omaha.
He can't let basketball take a step back.
We had a legit top 10 basketball team next year. If he makes all these changes one of the big 3 actually has to win some games.
No one is going to give a frick about Womens basketball if we're in the independence bowl, not going to Omaha and going to the NIT
Scott is going to pay through the nose but he's not taking a chance. He doesn't have the luxury of taking a chance

Wade won’t be coaching anywhere for a while so you don’t have to worry about that. Has Scott ever had to hire a coach before for a program that was going to get hit with sanctions? He will have to pay big money to get someone here to deal with this mess. I don’t believe you are going to get a “big fish” like we would expect from a normal Scott hire unless it is an older coach who will serve as a place holder and collect a retirement check the next 3 years.

What's the fascination with youth? You're like most people that dismiss and discard anything that's not the newest. Football, Baseball, women's BB would all rather have seasoned and proven leaders instead of youth. Get real and get a life.

quote:Of course I'd prefer a big-name proven commodity. But since you appear to lack common sense, I'll fill you in. Scott Drew and Jay Wright and Eric Musselman types aren't coming here. The big game hunter is going to be shooting with blanks because of all the uncertainty and looming sanctions. The football, baseball, and women's basketball coaching jobs didn't have dark clouds lingering over them. You can't compare those job searches to this one.

So taking that into account, yes, I'd absolutely prefer to take a chance with an exciting young coach like Todd Golden that's on the rise with huge upside vs. the alternative, an older more experienced coach who's been mediocre like Cuonzo Martin. That's all that LSU will have a chance at getting.

Oh yeah, he's coming here with massive NCAA sanctions looming. Lucky if we get East BR High's coach.

Then he's not throwing an anchor on his star by taking over a decimated program that will be decimated even more with sanctions. Just mentally prepare for Andy Kennedy

There’s no such thing as “massive sanctions” anymore. Louisville got a slap on the wrist, so did Auburn and Syracuse. Memphis didn’t even get punished neither did Bama outside of paying a fine and firing coaches. Hell, most people don’t even know Bama got in trouble and it was just 2 years ago. There’s no such thing as 5 years probation anymore, the networks wont allow it.

That's who I want at South Carolina, but our fricking cock gobling dumbass cuck bitch of an AD is going to keep Frank Martin.
I'll melt the frick down if LSU hires him. LSU will instantly have one of the best coaches in the league. He reminds me of Musselman and Oats combined.

He would not meet Tate’s criterion!

HOLY shite I literally suggested Golden in a group text of mine. He could be it!

Unlikely to happen. Get ready for a WOKE hire

Hey! Kennedy took UAB to the NCAAs this year for the first time in 7 years! Would be an on-brand Woody hire and he isn't bad.

He's perfectly decent and will get us to the NIT in a few years.

More insight on Golden.

Golden is whip-smart. He finds the little edges in everything: non-conference scheduling (a largely unexploited inefficiency), in-game strategy, and player evaluation.
Golden is about to lead San Francisco to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1998. He is responsible for San Francisco’s two highest KenPom finishes in the 21st century and three of the top five. He’s only been there three years.
Golden engineered the first at-large berth for a WCC program not named Gonzaga, BYU, or Saint Mary’s since 2002. He quite literally accomplished things that have not been done in decades – and did it quickly.
