Just going off of what coach says.
He referenced the correct rule but botched the phrase/term.

The balk was called because of where the ball was thrown, not how it was thrown. That’s why every umpire in the field was adamant about it all at the same time, and why the 1B umpire pointed directly at the first baseman as he made his call.

Obviously the base was occupied, but it was no longer defended, which is a balk.

throwing to a defender NOT covering the base is a ball.

throwing to a base when none of your defenders are there is an error, but not a balk.

to add to this, what made it an actual balk? His first move was to first base and he did throw it there. Was it the slight hesitation? or his foot coming down?

The first baseman has to be very near the bag. You can't "freeze" the baserunner by throwing to someone not near the bag.

In the short clip LSU Baseball has on Twitter, you can tell from the body language of the 1st baseman that he knew the rule and that the balk was legit. Pretty much all of the energy left his body.

What a debacle. I’ve watched it 20 times and the catcher put his hands up, the pitcher never looked over at first and the first baseman was crashing in. It’s incredible.

Typical west coast ball

A page from one of Chip Kelly's old "Gimmick" files must've somehow ended up in the baseball office.

Only the umpires see it. They use it to screw up a pitcher.

Simple answer is: you fake a throw and it’s a balk.
