re: Takeaways from the game last night

TJ Yeldon has had good games in his career against good teams. He hasn't lived off of a few 4th quarter runs against teams losing by 30 points that had already given up (all done pre-knee injury). But, if Blue doesn't play, then we can't yell BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUE while wearing our headbands, wrist bands and eye black to a game we aren't playing in.

Over-rated is harsh. I should have said over hyped. I was hoping to see him be targeted near the end zone where he would have a height advantage. Time will tell. We are going to need him or someone to step up.

He is a redshirt. And what did he do? He has been hyped up a bit. His speed and size is all we have been hearing since last year. Did you see him make a play?
It's the first game of his career. He at least got his feet wet and caught a hard pass and made a play.
Terrence Toliver had 1 catch in his first career game
Brandon LaFell had 1 catch in his first career game
Rueben Randle didn't have a catch in his first career game
Early Doucet didn't have a catch in his first career game
You starting to get it yet?

I stand corrected. Was just hoping to see him blaze. Hopefully that will come.

I only fault him for the fumble. His lack of yards on a few plays was the O-line's doing, not his.
O'line run blocking was troubling at times. Didn't move the line much. Hot and cold.

What does the "jumbo set" mean
It's a formation we get in when Miles gets frustrated. He tells his players to buckle up their chin straps and we are going to go old school on them. Usually results in negative yardage even against physically weaker teams like TCU

U sound mad.
Blue said Hill will be back next week, don't worry.

next time you don't know what jumbo set means, don't get iluvdatigers to ask for you, bro

I realize that we need to run some plays out of the I formation to keep the defenses honest and open up play action, but good lord we were extremely ineffective out of the I. It's been said already, but very little push up front on run plays. With that being said, we were much more effective out of the gun and spreading things out. I only wish we would have stuck with what was working last night and not kept reverting to the I.
There were some of the same tendencies as far as play calling goes that we had last year, but there was some different things, too. Definitely some things to be excited about.

Biggest things I saw that were bad was running blocking and the DE's. I think the DE's will get better with time and the OL needs time to gel.

Chicks can get away with anything.

It's when we go 2 TEs in I formation with 1 WR split out.

Redzone offense will improve over the year. TCU might be as solidly coached on defense as anyone we still have to face. I can't imagine anybody will play our WRs more tightly than they did last night. It looks like they were coached to grab; if you do it every play, it gets hard to call. The refs won't want to call it every single down, and then it gets tough to say "well it was worse this time than the others". Think of a physical basketball team, it's the same mentality.
Blue was a little rusty, but he also isn't all that great. He's a solid player with a great attitude, nothing more. Magee, on the other hand, might make some money in the NFL as a change of pace back. If Hill returns as good as he was last year, we're set with Hill/Magee/Blue. Hilliard looks like he can only get his yards on teams the O-line blows out, which would eliminate 3 teams from consideration (UGA, Fla, Bama). He might do fine against the rest.
For a first game against a good, veteran team, we played well. Our WRs and Mett looked great. We need to play with more discipline and awareness on defense and coverage, but that should come.
I'm really interested in how much the team will improve by the Auburn game. If we clean things up, we might be in for a special year.

Positives from the game:
- Mett looked great (should have been better without the drops and non-called pass interference) - looks like the experienced senior QB we all hoped he would become
- Oline was near perfect in pass protection
- Dline looked good
- Field goal kicking is no longer a concern
- Cam knows how to adjust and will be the best LSU hire ever
- Magee looked very good at RB
- Jordan Allen looked better than expected at DE
Negatives:
- Run blocking stunk (which is exactly opposite of what I was expecting)
- Welter needs to be benched
- WE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO STOP THE READ OPTION (this was the only way TCU moved the ball)
We also have to remember we played a good defensive team. Our receivers were blanketed all night and we still had good results. This offense will be unstoppable when Hill returns, a few young WR or TE steps up, and Cam gets a few more games under his belt.

Blue is very good once he gets beyond the line of scrimmage. Not so good if the openings are tight.

Agree with u on most observations, especially the one about we (and everyone else) run the ball better out of the shotgun or a 3 or 4 WR set. A lot of LSU fans think we have a dominant runnung game-not true. Last year we averaged 170 yds. per game (50th in FBS),4.2 yars per carry. hardly dominant. I don't think previous years were much better (have not checked yat). How many times do we have to use the Jumbo Set, especially down in the Red Zone, and get completely stuffed before Les realizes that the best way to run the ball is out of a spread formation. Last nite's rushing stats were 48 carries for 197 yds.= 4.1 yp carry. Take away Magee's 52 yd TD and it is 47 for 145 = 3.1 yards per carry. Mediocre at best. Many coaches like Les love to play smashmouth football, but it only works if you have a clear edge in talent, and sometimes not even then. Look at Oregon's or Arizona's yard per carry last year. Yes, thay are not in the SEC but 5.5 yards per carry is great in any league. RUN OUT OF THE SPREAD! PLEASE!

Watching the replay. RB's need to pick up that corner blitz. Several times last night they didn't recognize it.
