Takeaways from the game last night

- Mettenberger looked like the real deal. Many other folks who didn't watch the game were asking me "Mett still sucks? 16/32 is bad!" but had to explain how he threw the ball away when there was nothing there (5 times) and had 3 blatant drops (1 for a TD, 2 for very long gains). He did have many passes defended (8 or 9 IIRC looking at stats), but TCU had good coverage all night on our receivers. Mett still fit the ball into space where the receiver could make the play most of the night.
- OL pass blocking was FANTASTIC. TCU had 2 sacks off corner blitzes the RBs need to help out on.
- OL run blocking was a mis-mash of success and total failure. Under center it was a step above miserable. I feel like we had 2 solid runs all night from under center, and they both went for big gains...other than that, I felt like we got -2 to 3 yards every time from under center on a run. From shotgun, with the OL blocking in space, it seemed like a solid gain nearly every single time.
- Defense overall played well. Blue helped spot 7 points for TCU with the 6 yard field, so there was an easy 7 for them. The other 20 points TCU definitely earned except that 1 drive where Ego decided to help them not punt by roughing the QB (led to a TD). The DL I'm not worried about one bit, the secondary played well, mostly tight coverage all night. LBs underperformed but I seriously feel like Welter being on the field didnt help the whole unit all night. He, was, AWFUL. How the coaches could watch the film on this and make him anything above a scout team player the rest of his time here would be beyond me. He is simply not a big school caliber player, at all.
- Blue looks like he's headed down the Knile Davis route. Dominate before knee injury, look tentative and go down on first contact a lot after knee surgery. I'm really worried about him, and Hilliard showed nothing last night to look like he's back to his freshman form. Magee thankfully picked up the slack, and looked like a legitimate RB. I think he's dangerous as an outside runner and a guy with space. Hill cant get back soon enough.
- New FG kicker can make short FGs, wooo, that's good
Overall, I think we might start to see our new offensive identity last night. 3-4 wide, shotgun, slinging it around and giving the RBs space to run in because the OL blocks much better out of shotgun. I think we need to do definitely what we're strongest in, and scrap the whole jumbo set inside the 10 yard line (short of just being like at the 1 or 2 and just pounding it in). Last night's game would have been a blow out had Ego not made a mental mistake, a bad fumble by the RB inside the 10 yard line and finished off just ONE of those 3 FG drives. Watching some other teams, it's hard to say we're any worse than any other SEC team after week 1. We should be in the Top 10 for sure.

I agree with everything except I think we need to keep the jumbo set and run from under center to keep defenses honest. That said I loved the draw plays.
Oh and screen passes got blown up twice. Nice by Mett to not shite the bed and just spike it.

Blue is the most overrated LSU player in recent history.

Perfect breakdown of O Tbird
But has anyone figured out why Neighbors got so much PT???
I gotta rewatched to figure out what happened on D. Stats looked good but I never really felt confident when they were out there.
LBs were non existent. DL was better than I expected with Allen going JJ Watt all night. Ego was great other than the personal foul.
Eugene is a ball hawk. He was the only guy in the back seven that looked like a playmaker, although Mills had a couple of nice breakups too.

No kidding. One of them was a result of Blue's Linda Rondstat block. That line's from a MNF game. Don't remember if it was Dandy Don or not.

Good breakdown, but don't forget 7 points came from the kickoff return as well. So that's 14 points not on the 'D'.

All good observations. My simple takeaway from the game is that the Mettenberger we saw play big time football against Alabama last year is the guy we'll see consistently all season long this year.

I really thought we were watching the Clemson game all over again where we dominated them but let them hang around and beat us in the last second. Glad we put them away finally.

Loss to Clemson in CFA Bowl not as bad as previously thought...
Bama not as good as predicted.
LSU Defense will need to get more guys in play over next few games to build up depth.
Somebody besides Landry and Beckham are going to have to pull in some catches. Dural and Smith had at least 4 attempts batted away.

no,Blue is not overrated,he just needs a hole to go through

The Blue hate from this game is ridiculous. The fumble was bad. Most of his bad runs were runs where he had no chance for positive yards. He'll be fine this year and we will need him.

No hate here, but he better learn and execute his pass blocking or he's going to get Mett lit up.

Blue didn't have a single big run to skew his numbers and STILL averaged 4.7 yards per carry all while TCU stacked the box. The hate on this board is flat out stupidity.
With yalls logic, TJ Yeldon is garbage. He had worse stats than Blue had.

Takeaways from the game last night
My biggest concern from last night was the lack of redzone TDs. This was a huge problem last year as we were 103rd with 51% TD. We were 3-6 last night.
We have to figure out ways to score more TDs in the redzone.

I agree mostly with OP but we need to figure out read option assignments as we will see it many x this year.

the formation where they line up like a rugby scrum needs to go away. Why keep 11 in the box ?
Posted on 9/1/13 at 10:56 am to thunderbird1100
There were some first game jitters obvious, but I was very pleased to see how tight the offense looked. It looked really crisp, especially Mettenberger. It was fun to see someone slinging the rock and making good decisions.

Blue had rushes of 0, 1, 1, -1, -1, -1, -3, and 0. 8 of 19 carries were complete shite. Add in a lost fumble backed up to our goalline and a boneheaded non-blitz pickup that caused a sack and he had a great night.

Did anyone but me notice that LSU run 80 plays against TCU? That is That is one of the effects of the Cameron offense. Get to the LOS and run a play. 3rd down conversions did not hurt either. Execution ....Execution. Believe me it will get even better. This was the first game.
Except on the long pass down the right side line Mett did a great job of throwing the ball to the place where only the LSU receiver could get it. I love that. Beckham made great D play to prevent an interception.
