Why you should never base it solely on an interview.

My favorite Spurrier rumor is him being overheard saying “let’s hang 50 on these bums and get out of here“ before the 97 game. Of course, we all know the outcome of that game and the birth of the “shiny pants” legend.

Interviewed for it. It didn’t go well, per him. Went to duke and was hired a few years later.

Another that interviewed for the job was three time Super Bowl winning coach, Mike Shanahan.

You're using hindsight to say he should've been hired because of what he became. Don't be silly.

Years back I heard someone that was supposedly "in the know" swore that Spurrier was taken to Ruth Chris SH during the interview and when he walked past a table, he overheard someone say loud enough for him to hear .... "isn't that the guy that got arrested for smoking marijuana, sure hope he isn't hired as OUR coach".

Whether true or not...I have no clue but I wouldn't put it past some snob a-hole saying that.

It wasn't Ruth Chris Steak House. It happened at ChiChi's.

You can thank Arnsparger for Archer. He recommended him if I recall. Why would he risk losing Spurrier to LSU when he was being named AD at Florida. Worked good for Arnsparger having Archer fail and retaining Spurrier.

Keep in mind Alabama, Texas and Southern Cal all had openings that year, too.

Please tell me no one really thinks Arnsparger went to Florida as AD with this secret plan to hire Spurrier in 3 years? Actually with his own ego Arnsparger basically had to be forced to hire Spurrier. He didn't want him.

Seriously, if it was known what a great coach Spurrier would be, why was Duke the only one to offer him a HC job?

In '86, Spurrier was a mostly unproven coach. Obviously, we made a mistake.

Whether he would have left for Gainesville in '90 who knows. Imagining him coaching Hodson with Davis, Magee, Moss, etc makes one smile.

For now all you need to know is Les (and Leonard) made him quit - literally.

I was a student worker at the alumni center where they conducted the interview. A fourth coach they interviewed was Sam Rutigliano former Cleveland head man.

They didn’t just hire Archer, but kept Arnsbargers staff together. Worked for two years. Several had long careers including Daigle and Mangurian in the NFL. Archer just couldn’t keep it going.

Rex Grossman lit us up like a frickin tinder box in '01. That was as impressive of a passing display as I've seen live.

LSU also did it have an AD at the time and promoting from with in was still the most common way of hiring a HC.

I think the big thing was that Arnsparger left LSU to be AD at UF and hired Spurrier. We hired Archer then Curley.

Archer was hand picked by Arnsparger to be his successor. The other guys we interviewed were Mack Brown and Mike Shanahan.

He was left waiting at a restaurant and LSU didn't show up because they "got their man". Crazy stuff.

Iknow this to be true. Bob Broadhead told me about it. Spurrier would not leave his office. He had just failed with a WFL team and was loking for a job.

I told Bob he is a Florida man and stay away from him.

Bob hired Arnsparger who left LSU to be AD at Florida.

He was begging for the job. The stupidly turned him down. Spurrier would have owned the SEC at LSU.

some don't like Spurrier but the guy won games.

He was probably the best trash talking coach of all time too.

When he was told that Peyton Manning was coming back for his senior season he commented that he probably wanted coming back for another shot at being MVP of the Citrus Bowl.

When Auburn had a fire in their Library, Spurrier commented that it was a shame that 15 of the 20 books that burned hadn't been colored yet.

About playing in tennessee’s Neyland Stadium; Will be the 14th time I’ve coached in Neyland Stadium. … I’ve coached there more than some of their head coaches.”
