I visited with Spurrier over cocktails before the GMAC bowl (he was the keynote speaker at one of the functions) and I asked him about it. His version of the story was LSU flew him in for an interview and he was under the impression they were going to offer him the job. He was prepared to accept, but at dinner a group of trustees was at a nearby table introducing Mike Archer as the new LSU head coach. He said it left him a little salty.

Just in case it was not bad enough in your minds, Mike Shanahan was in the final 2 until the players stepped in and rallied for Archer which was a catastrophic hire. He destroyed the program. One year he signed 12 Texas recruits. Only one, Wayne Williams ever played in a game. Archer was a bad talent evaluator and lazy recruiter.

That is correct. In his time at Florida (1990-2001) he won 11 of 12 games (notable upset in 1997). Most of those were blowouts, including the two meetings when Saban coached LSU.

Don’t forget his best zinger: “Can’t spell Citrus Bowl without UT”. Sonofabitch hated Tennessee & he is from there. LOL.

Damn people.

Spurrier kicked a lot of schools asses.

You children might be surprised to know that.

He beat LSU because LSU was the team on the other side of the field.

Some of you are so damn provincial.

It’s not a rumor, it’s just documented fact. He and Mike Shanahan and Sam Rutigliano ( former NFL coach ) and numerous others wanted the job but we passed. By the way, Spurrier easily could have won a National title right out of the gates at LSU, as our 87 team was loaded and went 10-1-1.

Arnsparger basically had to be forced to hire Spurrier

It was actually a last gasp effort to retain his job as Florida AD. Many wanted him out after Galen Hall failed that program and was fired in '89. Florida football had just come off probation, and was reeling. Spurrier was a spectacular hire.

It was Dinardo. Curly lost all 4 games to Spurrier: 1991 (0-16), 1992 (21-28), 1993 (3-58), 1994 (18-42).

Makes the fact that a loss to LSU made him quit during the season at USCe even more interesting

two groups (Spurrier, Archer et al)were at Ruths Chris, according to my Father who was there and told me the story. Normally one informs the losing candidate we're going another direction, to his face.

RUMOR??? No, it's very much true.
Just think, if LSU had beaten Florida State in 79, Bobby Bowden would've been Charlie Mac's replacement. If LSU wouldn't have listened to Hodson, Rodrigue, et al, Spurrier would've been here, although he would've left for Florida in 90 anyway.
