Steve Spurrier Rumor
Is it true that when LSU hired Mike Archer as head coach, Steve Spurrier tried really hard to get an interview and was denied. That was the reason he was on a mission to embarrass LSU as much as possible and did so by accomplishing this:

When he coached Florida from 1990 to 2001, he was 11-1 vs. the Tigers against four coaches (1-0 vs. Mike Archer, 4-0 vs. Curley Hallman, 4-1 vs. Gerry DiNardo, 2-0 vs. Nick Saban).

re: Steve Spurrier Rumor
Didn't Ansparnger torpedo his chances at LSU because he left LSU to become the Florida AD and knew he wanted to hire him there? Or something like that.

He was interviewed and didn't do well in it by his own admission. Didn't make it to a second interview and took the Duke job.

He spoke about it last year.

I believe it's true that he wanted the job. I doubt that's what motivated Spurrier, because he was a winner, and winners are motivated by winning.

Yes. We should've hired someone who interviewed poorly because a decade later, he won a title.

In fairness, a LOT of teams whipped our arse under Archer and Hallman, so I do not take it personally that Spurrier did so.

Spurrier wasn't even the best of the three candidates that LSU interviewed. The third coach interviewed was Mike Shanahan.

Spurrier enjoyed running up the score on everybody back then. It was not just LSU.

It would have been nice had we hired Spurrier, but he would not have stayed long. He would have left the minute Florida called.

re: Steve Spurrier Rumor
He was a Head Coach in the USFL when it went under in early 1986 and needed a job I’m sure he was interested. The idea that he held a grudge seems more like urban legend. His experience at that point was an OC at Duke and the USFL basically. There were other jobs open that offseason like Texas and Alabama and he was hired by Duke so this idea that LSU “blew it” is pure 20/20 hindsight. He was not a hot commodity. LSU also did it have an AD at the time and promoting from with in was still the most common way of hiring a HC.

re: Steve Spurrier Rumor
Hopefully you read the comments that explained some of it. He was interviewed. While he had been successful in the USFL Archer was actually a hot name in college football at the time having been the DC for Arnsparger of a very good defensive team at LSU. His first two seasons actually show he could coach IMO, his next two show he could not recruit.

Spurrier had turned down the Mississippi State job to pursue the LSU job but Asperger's recommendation for Archer probably sealed the deal TBH. And honestly, unless Spurrier won a title in his first three years, who's to say he doesn't take the Florida Job anyway when they came calling?

Ancient history now.

ETA: We also reportedly interview Mike Shanahan, and Mack Brown.
