Ok so is Jyaire Brown and JK Johnson just complete busts because why are we still trotting Sage out there at starting CB if the other two were supposed to be talented Ohio St transfer CBs?
Something isn’t adding up here.

Apparently db’s were making some plays. Offense still winning mostly but their catches were hard fought. The more distressing news is the defensive line couldn’t stop any run play. Offense line getting whatever they wanted. I do think o line will be an elite unit but d line not being at all competitive is disappointing. Also, o line won every rep in one on one pass blocking drills.

Womack will end up being our best defensive lineman

Sage was the highest rated cb last year per pff . That's why he's starting over jk johnson. Plus jk was hurt all last year. Maybe jayiere is better but it's gonna take more than one practice for the coaches to notice that

That just tells you how bad LSU has been hurting CB wise when Sage is your highest rated CB. Freaking depressing man

The reality is that Perkins is the only player in the current two-deep (excluding freshman, if any) who will be drafted in the first three rounds.
That is a talent disaster.

Yeah sage takes too many risks. He trys to make plays on balls he can't get to he likes to get under receivers he can't run with because he thinks he's demon sanders and has closing speed. Besides that he's an average player

I’m sure they were anticipating it. The problem is that is doesn’t really mean they will get better. The same thing happened last year with the DB’s. They were constantly getting beat by the WR all of fall camp. Many people on here ignored it and they chalked it up our WR being so good, which they were. But it still turned out to be a major concern, which I think the DL this year will be as well.

We lost a year and a half with House.

You can't tell much about trenches play unless you're going live in full pads

I really dont get where people are thinking Johnson and Brown were some huge portal lands. The story on either doesnt paint one as some kind of instant starter here.
Brown played 48 snaps on defense his 2nd year at tOSU last year and between his freshman and sophomore years graded out in the high 60s on PFF which is basically above average to decent.
Johnson played a good bit his sophomore year (2022) at tOSU but graded out completely average around 60. Theres a reason he hit the portal, and also spent all of last year hurt and couldnt play, so not only was he not any good really he's coming off a major injury.
The fact ius over the past 2 cycle the only decent portal CB we've taken is Zy Alexander who spent part of last year hurt and might miss the first part of this season as well. And Alexander certainly isnt a game changer CB at that, he was decent but nothing special.

Ryan is in there bc he knows what to do. We have more physically talented CBs on the team but they are still unsure of what to do play in and play out. As the more talented players get more comfortable, you will see Ryan rotate back to nickel/safety.
What good is knowing what to do if you can't physically make the play if/when you are in position? Think about it. 31 games played. Two noteworthy plays. One, the strip fumble vs. Alabama (that was overturned because of a chickenshit rule); Second, a 4th down pass breakup vs. Florida last year. A play on which he was actually beaten, leaving the the WR for what should have been a 1st down if not for a poor throw behind the WR.
You and I could probably "learn what to do" and know where to be. But if I'm not fast enough to keep up with a WR or physical enough to make the tackle it doesn't really matter if I'm in the right spot.

I can flip this and say what good is being able to physically make the play if you're never in position to make it?
When constructing a defense, having guys that know their job and can be in the right place is the most important thing. Doesn't matter if a guy has the best ball skills in the world if he doesn't do his job. It leaves holes in the defense for easy throws.
Now I agree that he is not the best player and I also hope that one of the more talented younger players beat him out. But I have no issue with him getting the first crack at it as the floor of CB room and then making a younger guy unseat him during camp or early in the season.
BK even said it during hid presser. Guys like Woodland have the talent, but its about consistency. You can't have a guy make a play one snap and then be out of position the next. It sows distrust amongst your defense and then guys start trying to do to much because they don't trust their teammate to be where they should be. Hopefully during camp, Woodland or one of the OSU guys figures it out. Or Zy gets healthy enough to play.

This is a valid point, but in college it's easier to make up with physical tools. Some guys are able to hide their lack of knowledge with the fact that they are just athletically superior. There are other guys that will always be in the right spot, but will still get beat because the guy across from them is just physically more dominant.
Basically I think it goes both ways and if you really want to be good, you obviously need both.

Thank you for the explanation. Now I can see why Sage is still out there.
Just needed some clarification on those two from someone who knew more about them.
