Was he coaching when Hartley kicked 9/9 and won the NFC to the Super Bowl? And the onside kick recovery in said super bowl? Interesting questions.

This is not for recruiting. Read the article. They are waiting the NCAAs decision for a 10th assistant.

Saints special teams averages over the last five years:
I love the selective tenure people put out there. because if you look beyond that time frame. you will find.
In 2011, McMahon guided the special teams units to one of their best seasons since taking over as coordinator as the club finished eighth in the Dallas Morning News special teams rankings. Morstead finished second in the NFC and fourth in the NFL with a 48.3 gross punting average and second in the league with a 43.1 net average. Morstead also ranked first in the league with an NFL-record 68 touchbacks. K John Kasay ranked second in the NFL in scoring among kickers and set a team record with 147 points. Darren Sproles made an immediate impact on the return units, handling both punt and kickoff return duties as part of a season where he set an NFL record with 2,696 all-purpose yards. He averaged 10.2 yards on punt returns with one touchdown and ranked third in the NFC and sixth in the league on kickoff returns. McMahon’s coverage units ranked fifth in the NFL in opponent punt return average, allowing only 6.2 yards per return.McMahon fostered improvement out of both K Garrett Hartley and Morstead in 2010. In his first full NFL season, Hartley made his final 10 field goal attempts and 15-of-his-last-16. The punter enjoyed a solid campaign, finishing sixth in the NFL with a 45.9 gross average. The Saints were only one of four NFL teams to not allow a blocked kick or give up a special teams score.
The kicking game played a crucial role in the 2009 championship campaign. The club finished fourth in the league in kickoff return average (24.4) as Courtney Roby had the first touchdown return by a Saint since 2004. In the postseason, Reggie Bush had an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown to break open the NFC Divisional Playoff vs. Arizona.
While the coverage units recovered three fumbles, the most improved group were the specialists. Hartley, who made the first 16 field goal attempts of his career, setting what was an NFL record for most consecutive makes to start, came through in the clutch twice in the postseason. His 40-yard field goal in overtime of the NFC Championship game sent the Saints to the Super Bowl. Hartley then became the first kicker in Super Bowl history to boot three field goals of 40-or-more yards. Morstead, the club’s fifth round draft choice, was the first Saints punter to capture NFC Special Teams Player of the Week twice in the same season. In Super Bowl XLIV, he successfully executed an onside kick at the start of the second half that brought possession back to New Orleans.
In McMahon’s first season as coordinator in 2008, New Orleans finished as one of only four teams to rank in the top 10 in both punt return average (fourth) and kickoff return average (eighth). Bush scored on two punt returns vs. Minnesota to tie an NFL record. Hartley, an undrafted rookie at the time, started his field goal streak by making all 13 attempts.
McMahon served as assistant special teams coach for his first two years in New Orleans, following a one-year stint as tight ends/special teams coach at East Carolina. In 2005, the Pirates finished in the top 20 in the nation in field goal accuracy and had a pair of solid return men. McMahon also tutored tight ends as part of a staff that directed ECU to the fourth-highest passing total in school history.
He spent 13 years at the University of Illinois (1992-2004), working primarily with the special teams, tight ends and wide receivers. In 1997, McMahon took on the additional responsibility of overseeing the special teams. His efforts were integral in Illinois making four bowl appearances and twice appearing in the final national rankings, and in 2001 the school finished 10-2 and captured the Big Ten title.
He must have forgot how to coach. got to love the rant. A guy can make it to the highest level of his profession but he sucks because some ranter on a message board said so.

You don't know what you're talking about.
This isn't a Rant thing.
He was universally despised by Saints fans. He is really bad.

oh, Thank God you cleared that up for me. Ok, he must suck then if saints fan said so.
Here is the point.
1) He is a analyst for lsu. Let's not get over dramatic here.
2) The man has coached for close to 30 years. He's made it to the NFL. That's the top at his profession. Not only has he made to the n.f.l., he has been successful there. He has a super bowl ring in which his special teams were a big part of.
So, I really don't care what the last five years has been. His body of work says he has been successful in the past and at the highest level. Therefore, he has knowledge as to what he is doing.
The N.F.L is filled with great coaches that go there because of their past success. Some of their failures has nothing to do with their coaching ability. Andy Reid was fired from Philly. However, he's having success at K.C. while Philly isn't. Was it Reid or the administration? Bill B. himself was fired from Cleveland. Did he suck because he couldn't win at Cleveland? Pete Carol was fired in New England and the Jets, does he suck? It hasn't mattered who the d.c. has been at the saints, the defense still sucks. who's fault is that?
So, forgive me for believing a coach that has been successful in the past can be successful again. just because his position hasn't had success recently, doesn't mean he forgot how to coach and can't have success.

McMahon is Not going to be the new ST coach he's a ST consultant like April is. He's not going recruit, at least I don't believe so.

if he survived as a ST coach in the NFL for 10 years he can't be as bad as y'all are portraying him

So he was brought on as a special teams analyst ? The wording reminds me of the commercial where the bank is getting robbed and the security guy says he's not a security guard... he's a security monitor !
Seems like a good move for LSU either way.

No, I say he sucks bc I've watched every game his ST units have played for the past decade. Kicking game was a fiasco almost every single year and Sproles/Bush would have been successful for any team.
He is utterly despised by Saints fans but clearly your wikipedia skills trump our actual experience

so if LSU is allowed a 10th coach to hire this is who lsu hires
. Not impressed

If this matters, Saints 2016 special team stats:
Field goals made: 28 made at 98%, ranked 12th (tied). Okay...could be better.
Extra points made: 49 made at 98%, ranked 2nd. Pretty good in this area (minus the Denver game when it counted the most...lol).
Punts: Net return yardage of 44.1. ranked 4th. Pretty good in this area.
Kick off returns, 16.5 yard average, ranked 31st. Suckage.
Punt returns, 9.6 yard average, ranked 9th. Okay.
Opponent field goals made, 91.4% made by opponents, ranked 28th. Suckage.
Opponent Xpoint made, 95.7%, ranked 22nd. Suckage.
Opponent Punt return, 9.6 yards, ranked 24th. Suckage.
Opponent Average Kickoff return, 22.5 yards, ranked 20th.
Suckage.

The Saints have made seriously terrible big time FA signings the last few years. All of that money tied up in shite players led them to have to draft smart which other than last 2 years they did not. So, the defense has been filled with overrated signings and a bunch of shite draft choices other than a few notable standouts.
So if the starting unit is that bad, then what lies underneath? What does that say about those guys who are riding that depth chart and only get to play on ST's? It's not good. The Saints D/ST have suffered because of horrible FA signings and terrible draft choices, leading to a serious lack of quality depth. I'm not saying McMahon is some ST world beater, but when he did have quality units in 09/11 he did do good stuff with them.
All of this arguing is for naught, however, as the dude is not going to be our ST coach. Him coming on board for a short while is definitely not going to hurt us.
I'm happy it's being discussed tho, as it reminded me Joe Vitt was fired and that, I am still thrilled about.

Cam Cameron was a slamn dunk too.
Anyone who watched the saints knows he sucked.
Funny you should mention Sproles. Crazy how he went from a terrible punt returner with the Saints to one of the NFL's best with the Eagles
And if you watched the Saints this season, the special teams unit was unprepared and outcoached
1)Not being ready for a deep kickoff against Oakland
2) blocked FG for a TD against the Giants
3) blocked XP against Denver that cost us the game
That had nothing to do with the talent level at play. That had to do with weaknesses in scheme and lake of preparedness
And for those bringing up 2011, we had 2 special teams turnovers against SF in the playoffs.

So, I really don't care what the last five years has been
We should bring back Les

And again Marcus Murphy does nothing but return kicks and he can't teach him how to catch them.
Soooo its his fault that he couldn't teach a Return Specialist how to catch a ball??? This is the NFL if you cant catch the football thats not on the coach thats on lack of concentration. Not the coaches fault smh, the level of arrogance is mind blowing. I guess it was Coach O's fault for fumbling in red zone against florida and missing Fgs too.
