I agree with your post 100%. Welter wasn't the best linebacker on the team while he was in school, but the young man shouldn't continue to get blasted by this fanbase. I'm sure he gave his best effort.

And in the picture you submitted with you post clearly shows Welter wasn't the only defender chasing the ball carrier from behind. To me, it shows Welter is the only one still trying to catch the guy.

All that being said, I didn't take your post as "piling on", I only responded to yours because of the picture.

He could have done any number of different alignments. Jones plays inside linebacker in the NFL. To say, well chief didn't start Welter over him is still bs.

Exactly, what was Welter gonna do, say Sorry coach, put Debo in since he's better than me?

Christ. I would go with what my d coordinator had to say and trust his advice. it wasn't like chavis was a bum he was good here at LSU.

Chief did play Lamar Louis over Debo though, I hated that too.

Looking back, there were a lot of head scratchers with Chavis.
His last year was the year we only had 19 sacks. The next year we generated 34 with a bunch of players who were riding the bench the previous year. A lot of people attributed that to Brick being replaced by O, but who knows.

With relatively equal playing time over two years, Jones and Lamar Louis accumulated 127 and 59 tackles respectively.
Louis started over Jones when they were both Juniors.

The Welter/Beckwith "conspiracy" is probably the most talked about, but if you take into account 2013 it may become more clear. Welter had 80 tackles in '13 (that's more than anyone on the 2011 squad). Beckwith's best year was only 84. It must have had something to do with the game dynamics caused by that terrible defense in 2013 or Welter just turned terrible in '14.

football ignorant. why then did chavis do well at stops bailing out les and to a lesser extent fulmer time after time? it's TAMU. nobody will win shite there. jimbo is about to find out the hard way sadly.

I wouldn't say John Chavis is the worst DC in America, but it's fair to say at $1.6 million/year, he's the most "over paid" DC in America. . When evaluating JC's performance at TAMU, I think we should take into account the longevity of his career and it's devolution. As a DC, John Chavis UT>John Chavis LSU>>John Chavis TAMU. John Chavis's career started deteriorating during his end times at LSU. While here, he benefitted from elite talent recruited by others, not so much from his schemes. JC has not been known as a recruiter for some time. His lack of success at TAMU is due to a combination of a declining career combined w/ non-elite talent. Yeah, TAMU hasn't had a culture of good defenses for a long time and JC hasn't had the energy and desire to improve that culture.

While DC was at LSU, I once went on a hunt where the guide claimed to have played football (LB) at Tenn under JC. When I asked about "the Chief", he got a confused look on his face. Apparently, he didn't have that nickname in those years. Regardless, it was apparent the former player continued to have an affection and respect for his former coach.

to some extent I think it's just one of those "things". Chief's scheme didn't always lend itself to DEs in particular getting sacks. Mingo and Sam got theirs for a couple years, but I think the scheme had a weird way of lining the RDE about a yard off the LOS on a lotta plays and limiting them on pass rush. Sam and Danielle Hunter played that position.

interestingly, all 3 of his A&M defenses got 30+ sacks and were among the sacks/ game leaders in the SEC. you can't even put that all on Myles Garrett, this 2017 defense led the SEC.

Welter had 80 in 13 games in 13. Beckwith had 91 in 10 games in 2016.

the 2013 defense actually wasn't terrible after they kinda settled in around midseason. and it wasn't so much that Welter got terrible in 2014 (though he did make some glaring mistakes) as the DTs in front of him the early part of the year were worse than Freak and Ego in 2013. switching to Beckwith was big, but so was Godchaux starting at DT.

my main problem with miles and his defenses was he just sat there and watched haley miss constantly on DL recruits and Chavis on LB recruits. those two destroyed one of the best front 7's in college football. miles would come around later by hiring coach O and aranda. coach stud, who I thought was a good OL coach was a shite recruiter and miles just didn't hold him accountable either. one of the main jobs of a HC is to hold his coaches accountable. simple as that.

I remember all of your whiners giving thanks he was the DC after he replaced Malveto. Quite a few compliments were paid to him on this board all the way through 2012.

In fact, I remember his defense keeping us in 1/12, didn't quit at all and quite a few people on this board said so.

The mob is fickle, brother.

Yeah - he was such a huge improvement over Malveto and did field a few good defenses at Tennessee and LSU.

Of course a ham sandwich or pop tart would have been an improvement over Malveto.

Amen and amen. It didn't help that Chief slinked away from the job like a little bitch. That certainly didn't help ... at all.
