re: So why does LSU have much less show up for the Spring Game?

I don't think the spring game is marketed well.
No one outside of this board knows when it is, and beyond that, there are probably a good number who don't even know WHAT it is.
That's because LSU doesn't promote it heavily at all.
Mention the spring game, and it's been my experience that the next words that come out of a Tiger fan's mouth are... "shite, I missed the spring game. What happened?"

There's alot more to do in Louisiana than there is in Alabama.

LSU's attendance is in line with about 90 of the 120 DIV 1 schools.
Why don't you ask this question.... Why do you think the fans of about 10 of 120 Division 1 schools feel the need to have to sell out a spring game... a PRACTICE?

I hope your kidding...LSU has one of the biggest fan bases in the country both inside and out of Lousiana. On an average Saturday LSU has anywhere from 50,000-100,000 more people on its campus than any other school in the nation. I mean geez we already have the #7th largest stadium and how many countless people just go to tailgate during the day. Last year I heard a stat that LSU had 250,000 people on the campus for the Florida game.
It ultimately goes down to the simple fact that it was a SPRING GAME lol...not to mention you could see it on tv.

To really enjoy a Spring Game, you have to be into the "football" aspect of the team and a program. You have to want to go check out how Jai Eugene looks at safety, or how Greg Shaw is doing at tackle. That's all it's for, a scrimmage to evaluate players.
While LSU has an almost unparalleled fan base when it comes to gathering for a big game, tailgating, and then raising hell during the game, IMO we don't have a very educated or football-knowledgeable fan base. Most of the people I sit around simply don't know or don't care who the 2nd string O-linemen is, or who the new stud freshman RB is coming up. Thus, low attendance for spring games, and 1 reason why the place clears out during blowouts. I myself like to sit and watch the "garbage time" when the young guys get a chance to play, many others do not.

+1...Most people really don't know that much about the game, but they do like to support the team/school. Not to mention the fact that LSU sports have become social events rather than sporting events...

Some people go mainly to yell and scream at the other team's players, coaches, and fans. I figure that no one yelled "Tiger Bait" at the game (unless it was to Lester). The game was actually boring; no one to pull for.

as original as all these pot shots at gumps and the state of Alabama are, its doesn't explain why other teams not just Alabama draw better for the Spring game. Its not like Austin, Texas is lacking other things to do in the spring.

I didn't go b/c I went turkey hunting. However, had I not gone to the camp I still wouldn't have gone to see a practice five months before the start of the season...plus baseball was on and the b-ball tourney...

Different culture, we are not as rabid a fan base as the gumps, and I'm glad of it. We don't erect statues to coaches till they are very old or dead. In spite of his success, Saban was not pursued heavily when the Miami deal came up. Insiders tell me the AD had enough of of his antics and many were glad to see him go. The Gumps don't care if he kills a coed a week on McFarland Blvd, they will stay with a winner no matter what.
Football is important and fun here, but crawfish boils, good food, outdoor activities get a lot of attention also. If we win 5 BCS titles in a row we will never get more than 30k-40K at the spring game.

Good to know politics and ego are more important than winning big.

You and the OP make it sound as though Alabama, Texas, and Nebraska have been selling out spring games forever. Please go check attendance numbers for Bama before the arrival of the Nickster. Not even a half full stadium. Bama sold out that first year and got a lot of positive press for it and printed shirts. Other schools and fanbases saw that and have taken the spring game sellout thing as a challenge. Schools like Nebraska, who sold out last year. Its kind of like the Big Head Cutouts at ESPNs College Gameday set, someone did it first, and now you see a bunch at every stop. At LSU we don't give a frick about trendy groupthink, or PRACTICE.

I said no such thing, I have no idea what typical attendence is for the spring games, I would guess 20-30K would be fairly standard and the 90K Bama was an extreme outlier.
Texas seems like they make an event out if with other attractions that would increase over all attendence, I have no clue how long they have been doing it.
It would seem to be more recent though and not something that was promoted say 10-15 years ago, like signing day has become a big event.

Simply put, its never been a major event for our fanbase. Some schools like Bama have made a tradition of it, but its never been a big deal here.
If it used to be packed, and then now was empty I'd think it was something else.

I am not going to buy that there is so much otherstuff going on in BR that time of year
you'd be surprised. Not just in BRLA but throughout Louisiana
I think there are something like 120 different "festivals" scheduled in south LA in the next 150 days....basically something somewhere going on everyday....while some live their lives for their football team, and LSU has some like that, most of us prefer #1- a game that counts and #2 we're just living to have a good time......and practice ain't a good time

Every place has things going on, but you'd be hard pressed to find a place with more going on than Louisiana at this time of year.
1. Festivals like was mentioned. There were so many people at the Southdown Arts & Crafts festival in Houma Saturday that they had to start shuttling people to their cars.
2. It's prime planting and gardening time. Home Depot, Lowe's, Wal Mart were all packed this weekend with people trying to get their planting done before the South Louisiana heat. Other states don't have to worry about that to much. For most states this is the first month of planting for them, and can plant through July.
3. We do love our baseball more than most. LSU had 2 games on the same day as the spring game. There's 10,000 of your fans. High School baseball is in full swing and had a bunch of games this weekend. Also, many little leagues had their opening day last weekend because kids are out of school for Easter. I know it was opening day in Lafourche, and it's where I was and it was packed.
4. At the end of the day it's still just a practice and not that fun for most folks when you don't have a team to root for or a school to root against.
That's just some of the things going on right now, add to that the beautiful weather, the fishing, the hunting, etc...

This is exactly the truth of the situation here.
The first year with Coach Saban, the crowd came, because he had closed all of the practices, and no one had seen him since he got off the plane that first day, and we wanted to see him. It was a beautiful week-end in Tuscaloosa, and a perfect time to take your kids to the stadium. I don't think anyone planned for 92,000 to show up, and really there were more than that, because they had to close the gates and a lot of people were still outside. We had a lot of people make fun of us because so many fans showed up and now they are the very ones that try to compete with us every year to have more than we had. It worked well for us, because I think for once Coach Saban was shocked. He couldn't believe the size of the crowd when they came out of the tunnel. He now knows that yes, we do take it seriously, and we love our guys, and that was before they were National Champions.
