Just about every great baseball team has a top closer. Closers can have a different mentality than other good pitchers. They thrive under pressure. They want the ball in the ninth with a 1 run lead and men on base. Having a flamethrower is a plus, but more importantly is a guy who can fill up the strike zone and has a go to strike out pitch.

It felt like Johnson was auditioning Little to be that guy last night. He looked good, a three run lead does help reduce the pressure. Little has the pitches ti be a closer, control would be the question, he did not have elite control at Vandy.

Who else can be that guy? I was thinking Riley Cooper has the mentality, but he might be a better long reliever if he doesn’t start. Ackenhausen pitched with kind of an attitude against Texas you like to see in closers. He was tough and threw strikes.

Anyone know who Johnson will go to in the ninth? It feels like the audition for that role has just begun. Who can stare down Parkman?

My thought last night was it is going to be hard to determine who has this mentality over the course of the month of March with only (1) series against Arkansas expecting to be close games.

Little has so much versatility I feel like it might be hard to stick him only at closer when he can pitch long relief or even be a starter. It will be interesting to see as the season continues.

We need to lock in three starters going into SEC play before we determine who the closer is.

I'm not going to rule Little out of one of the starting spots.

Little in high leverage spots. Ty Floyd as go-to 9th inning guy. Don't think we're gonna stick with just 1 closer.

Hard to say because we have a couple guys vying for starter spots and a few guys vying for long relief go to guys.

Gotta mail down starters before we name someone a closer

I think the closer comes before the third starter. You can do without a third starter if you have to. And if Skenes can give you seven innings or more on Friday, and your Saturday starter goes about six, you can move your primary long reliever to game 3 starter and empty the bullpen to get through the last five or six innings. But if you give up game one because you can’t close then good luck.

Little for now. But, I don't think they'll hesitate to go to him early and I don't think they'll use him multiple times in a weekend unless it's short spurts. If he comes in early and fades, I think you have to look at Cooper or Ack to follow. Last night, Jay went to Ack then Little but I think we could see it flipped sometimes. If Little's used up, I think they'd try to use Floyd in the role. Money and Edwards could be in the convo.

I'm ready to see what Moffett brings to the table, too. He can run it up there. He's just very unpolished as of now.

Sarcasm? Baseball has close games no matter who is playing. We also play Tennessee and Texas A&M in March.

Mix and match through the season so when postseason comes around guys have experience pitching in different roles and where they do best. Not all of your high leverage situations come in the 9th.

Think he has been nursing an injury that was only supposed to go a few weeks into the season. Curious as to when the time frame is looking for him to be ready.

Agreed. It’s going to depend on the score and whether there are lefties or righties up. I don’t think it’s Floyd because usually closers live on FB, Off speed, and messing with the batter’s timing. I haven’t seen that guy yet. I think Little will get a weekend spot IMO.

Reading the preview thread, sounds like Central Connecticut has some talent on the mound and returns alot lineup wise.

I think having one closer is overrated. I want 2 options, because i expect to win multiple close games on occasion. Ack/little/floyd are all options

And the whole “closers throw hard” narrative is lazy. The best closer we ever hd threw like 88 mph

Little was pitching last night regardless. The only reason they waited until a save situation to bring him in was because of how well Hurd and Ack pitched. I see the 2 lefties being high leverage situation guys. I think either Hurd or Little takes the Saturday role and the other becomes the closer. I like Floyd and Shores better as starters/long relief. You cant bring Shores in with guys on base until he develops an out pitch and Floyd is prone to giving up solo HRs which you cant afford from a closer. We haven't seen anyone try to pitch multiple times in a weekend yet. Not everyone can do that.
