So what else does Shores have in his arsenal besides an extremely hittable 98mph FB?

where's his out pitch?

he's just throwing straight heat with no run on his fastball

His slider was pretty effective during his freshman year. Seems to have lost that

Yup. It was a great pitch for him back then.

Bigger issue for Shores is the walks and getting behind in counts

LSU needs Chase Shores in the rotation to have any chance at Omaha.

I think it’s best to pull for the guy to get settled back into dominating SEC hitters and not throw him in the trash after 5 starts.

His fastball is a lot more hittable when they know it’s coming. His slider is much more enticing when hitters have to protect. He needs to get ahead in more counts.

He was not throwing his breaking pitch for strikes and got behind and in deep counts too often. He's got some things to work on, but he's going to be fine.

I'm far from a baseball guru but it certainly seems like good hitters aren't intimidated by heat if they know it's coming. Just seems like Chase is struggling to command any of his breaking pitches for strikes so it's becoming a hamster wheel you don't wanna be on.

Gets behind in count -> need a strike to prevent a walk-> hitters know he ins't commanding anything but the fastball -> hitter sits on fastball when ahead in the count -> 30 pitch inning.

Shores needs to climb the zone with his fastball which will result in more swing and miss with more impact on his secondary pitches.

SEC offenses will hit 96-98 if it’s consistently between the knees and waist.

It was obvious Texas hitters were looking fastball right over the plate and weren’t swinging at anything with spin.

He has never in his career dominated SEC hitters

But another problem when he does get ahead is that his 0-2 or 1-2 offering are very bad misses. I'm all for throwing a pitch out of the zone when you're that far ahead, but you have to give even the smallest possibility that it might be a strike.

I disagree. I think there are a couple of viable paths for success with the Sunday starter. I could see Guidry or Noot getting a shot. To me, Shores has bad body language. I think it would be helpful for him to come out of the pen while he continues his recovery both mentally and physically. That way he’s not sitting around all weekend thinking about it.

You think Guidry (currently physically not able to pitch), who throws a slider and 92 mph fastball is a better option starting than Shores, who throws a slider and a 98mph fastball?

This was basically the knock on him out of HS and why he made it to campus. He checks a lot of boxes with the big fastball and projectable frame but he was not as dominant as he should’ve been with the talent he’s got.

Guidry has far better command and also throw an overhand curve along with the slider.

It’s all about location with Shores. He was up in the zone all day and Texas made him pay for it. If he gets the ball down and throws strikes I think he will be alright

98mph on the black is way more effective than 98 on the white of the plate!

He just needs to have better control which hopefully will come as he continues to pitch this year. It's still early.

Shores shouldn't be our Sunday starter...the past few weekends has shown that! Surely, we have someone in the wings who can produce better results for us going forward.

Movement is irrelevant with 98, hitting your spots is all you need to do. Early in the season and he’s coming back from injury, if the control catches up to the velocity, he’ll be fine.

He has a pitch that goes about 3 feet in the left handers batters box.
