Don't understand that Emery wasn't used more in 1st half - also at goal line in 4th quarter.
JE is coming off an ACL and is clearly not yet 100%. He has a ton of rust to knock off. To put the game all on him would be malpractice. Throw the fricking ball and we win.

Him on video at end of game screaming and cussing at someone from the booth was an embarrassment. Gotta keep it together and he looks to be in over his head.
He called an atrocious game. Zero screens or outside runs. Only a few counters. Barely any play action.
For the first time in years, we have the horses. Can’t execute

We should also mention that those who are blaming playcalling also don't know what the plays called even were.
Most on here call any run out of the shotgun a draw and probably don’t realize every play call, including runs, have at least 2 different options tagged to it.

Kelly has to swallow his pride. If it means we have the throw it 50+ times then so be it. Play to win the damn game.
He wants to play complimentary football. The defense got worn down last year with our offense.
Not the only reason for them sucking but it did contribute.
I think he wanted to start the season off without getting into a track meet and demoralizing them.
There’s ways to accomplish both goals of having a complimentary o and D and still being aggressive in the air though.

If he had started chewing on grass, I’d have been certain Les was back. Turn Nuss loose to do what he does best. They couldn’t cover Lacy, yet he disappeared from the second half game plan.

Sloan was handcuffed by Kelly. All those running formations and plays were all Kelly's input.
Also, He lost his temper with Garret, who kept playing like a nervous bird when we needed him to step up and make plays.
Garret played great until when he had to step up and win the game with a couple of great drives. He looked lost about 4-5 plays late.
I don't blame Sloan for getting pissed!!

Les Kelly at the helm.
Les the Destroyer of Quarterbacks.
Coaching QBs into the fear of making mistakes is a Les thing. He could break the gunslinger mentality and make them scared to make big plays down the field.
Nuss could force things at times, but if he isn’t pushing it downfield he is not going to be successful. Coaching staff can’t become Les and break the gunslinger completely. They just need to sharpen his decision making and get him to have more patience at times. The OL hasn’t had to run block for a conventional running game since Kelly arrived. Nuss pushing it downfield is what is needed to open up the running game. There is a risk of some interceptions, but the reward will be worth it (including with the needed running game) if they let Nuss do what he does best and don’t make him a headcase playing in fear.
Never go full Les.

Not sure if that is by design on those check down or if Nuss is scared to throw an INT
Sure sounds a LOT like Jayden 2022, huh?

I think the decision to commit to the run was on Kelly. Sloan is a QB coach by training, those guys like to throw the ball.

I just don’t think this is as doable as it once was in CFB. Some teams that have elite talent on D can do it…but for the most part, nowadays you have to be putting up as many points as you can

This can't be stated enough. Definitely had the yips and he will get better and more comfortable over the next few cupcake games.
Look for 4 wins in a row and beat Ole Piss.

From what I read, it seems that USC decided to double team Lacy u the 2nd half. He wasn't getting those clean looks he got in the first half, apparently.

Lacy was still 1 on 1 most of the second half and was wide open down field multiple times.

Les Miles 2.0 after I thought we won’t see it again but here it is!

Sloan and Kelly got baited into running the ball.

Largely inconsequential distinction because either way is coaching.
Maybe the staff has gone too far in trying to tame the gunslinger out of Nuss, but we don’t need him putting the ball in harm’s way like he did at times earlier in his career as a backup.
Also, it’s highly unlikely any of those plays were designed to go to one check down route. You get that on some plays like screens, but Nuss likely chose to go short rather than throw routes further down the field. Unless you watch an all 22 replay, you won’t really know what else was available to him.

Actually that’s not true. There is a movement beginning in the NFL going back to more under center and even I Formation. There were an handful of teams running I in the preseason.
Also you have Michigan’s recent success and title last year. UGA isn’t as conservative as Michigan, but they definitely also have a power run game element to their scheme.
I was listening to a podcast last week talk about some OCs potentially moving back to power run games with QBs under center with the new college clock rules to shorten games. It’s also a reaction to how much smaller college LBs tend to be today because they play the pass a lot more defending spread offenses.
That’s where these shifts come from. Once the majority of programs are doing one thing, others will adjust and start running something different to gain an advantage. The run and shoot, spread option, spread, and air raid were all different reactions to counter the majority of power programs playing more traditional offenses in the past. Now the pendulum may be starting to swing back the other way.

I thought this too in real time. But after watching guys analyze video with access to the all-22–and much more expertise in the nuances of football than me, I understood a little more. They played 2 safety high and absolutely took away the deep pass in the 1st half. Which opened up the middle for Lacy and Taylor. But they decided they weren’t gonna let Lacy beat them in the 2nd half and adjusted.
Sloan made some mistakes—and I’d really like to know whose arse he was chewing in that cut to him. I also noticed the guy next to him trying to calm him down. The people I watched with didn’t catch it, but I just watched Blake Ruffino’s show, and he was the 1st person I heard bring it up. He thought—wasn’t sure—that Sloan was screaming “run the fricking plays I’m calling!!!”
Now, there’s only a couple people he could have been talking to, and I doubt it was BK. So it was likely Nuss. I don’t know if that meant he was checking out of stuff because he thought he saw something or was just defying Sloan. But that’s not the dynamic you want to have at that time of the game between your 1st time (at LSU) OC and 1st time starting QB. Both were obviously nervous and performed their poorest when it mattered most. Hopefully that gets fixed and they not only move beyond that, but get better from it.
Crazy thought—would Sloan (or Hankton too, I guess) be not too proud and cool with hiring Coach E as an analyst—hell, he’s probably one already—to be the guy that sits with Sloan in the booth and doesn’t call plays, just gives him and extra pair of eyes and keeps him calm in high pressure games/situations. Sloan’s called plays before, but I don’t think the stakes were quite as high when Tech was hosting Southern Miss.
How many times can we bring E back out of retirement to help fix shite. He’s battling Coach Pete for most all time. We brought back Pete last year, so E might have to come back to even it up.
