None of Skip's major hires (with the exception of Smoke) met the standards or adhered to the principles he built the success of his baseball program on (The guys who played for him or members of his coaching tree know it as "The System"). Why would he abandon those standards and principles at the AD level...

Skip made hiring decisions based upon preserving his legacy as the best coach (across all sports) in LSU history. Prove me wrong...

Skip was horrible as AD. Only Joe Dean worse in modern era.

Saban left building under Skip and Skip wasn’t in tune enough to hire Jimbo over Les. Skip lacked the balls to fire Les when Saban wanted to return in 2007.

Smoke, camp money, and worrying about bottom line vs winning plagued him as well. His primary hire Les being a creepy sex abuser cuts his legacy further.

I can’t believe the unrelenting love this board shows skip Bertman. He let pat Henry and Saban walk out the door and replaced pokey Chatman with fricking van chancellor. Alleva is a pr nightmare but at least he stumbled across an occasional nice hire and built great facilities

For whatever reason, this seems to be a very unpopular take although it's hard to find evidence to refute it.

Maineri was not a bad hire. He had a great run and won the National Championship. It was an excellent hire. It is just that his time here has gotten stale.

Didn’t skip hire Saban? Miles and PM both won a championship here early on also. That’s terrible?

He literally sold the baseball coaching job before he was even AD. Only smoke laval was willing to pay whatever it was $100k for a baseball camp mailing list and use of a 1986 Ford pickup truck.

There’s another thread where I basically said bertman was a horrible AD. Listed the reasons why and there are still bertman cock gobblers defending him.

Great coach - no doubt.

AD - horrendous

Henry yes, but Shaver has done well.

Saban was leaving to try his hand in pro ball. No one could have kept him here at that time.

ADs are never liked for long. They raise ticket prices.

I hate to defend Les, but are you saying Skip lacked the balls to fire a guy who had a top 5 finish and won the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame because Saban may have wanted to come back??

I seriously doubt Saban could have come in in 2007 and done better than a national title.

No AD hired Saban. That was Mark Emerett who met Saban and ordered Alleva (?) to get it done.

He hired national champion coaches in football and baseball.

Has any LSU AD ever don’t that besides him?

True dat.

In the two seasons previous to his eventual bolt to Miami, Saban flirted with both the Bears and Giants.

And I know this goes against the accepted break room dialog but Saban NEVER indicated that he wanted to return to LSU. His eventual landing at Alabama is along and a bit convoluted, but LSU was never realistically in the picture.
