To be fair - FSU has had a large - and good - band since the 90's- other than playing the tomahawk chop over and over and over and over and over again.

What a bunch of morons in this post...

-The band became part of the music school after World War II. Any success you remember in the last 75 years has been under the school of music.

-Blaming the school of music for piped in music?!?!? The ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT is ruining the band with dj's and MC's and piped in crap

-The band is exactly the same size as 10 years ago

-Hopefully the one poster wasn't comparing the LSU travel band to the full MSU band (who, btw, marched in polos and shorts and marched what I thought was a lackluster show)

-I sat near the band in the LSU section Saturday and, yes, they missed some cues on 1st and 4th downs. I was also at the Grambling game and thought the halftime show was fantastic.

The new dean of the College of Music & Dramatic Arts, Eric Lau, took that position in July of this year. He is a Tiger Band alum and understands the importance of the band. I have confidence that things will change for the better under his leadership.

Nothing will change as long as Damon Talley has control over Tiger Band. In fact, things will only continue to get worse.

South Carolina and Auburn both have marching bands that have dramatically improved over recent years. Both schools brought in new directors who prioritized increasing the size of their bands, as well as upping the number of brass instruments. USCe has about 360 members in their marching band, Auburn has about 380, Bama has aaround 400, as does Tennessee. Tiger Band's membership is capped at 325. This includes the Golden Girls and Color Guard, so we really only have about 275 actual musicians, and it's definitely noticeable in their sound.

THANK YOU. Please also make sure it's a 1st down before playing 1st Down.

Could be that the location of the band in these visiting venues makes alit a bit difficult to see parts of the field? I think in Tiger Stadium there’s great sight lines for them, and they may also have a spotter in the press box cueing the down songs?

IDK. I would think the drum major can see the field well enough in any stadium to know if the punting unit or field goal unit is coming on for the offense, etc. If not, he can also look at the screen or scoreboard too.

He played Trumpet, and he's the biggest Sunshine Pumper on the Tiger Band Alum page. Panties all in a wad over this.

You've been stewing all day over this, and had to come set up an account on a site that you hate just to say that.
You're the biggest sunshine pumper there is on the Tiger Band Alum page, and God forbid, someone gives says one thing slightly negative about TB. Grow up.

And no one is talking about the kids. I think we all agree we appreciate the band members and aren’t blaming this on them.

It’s either the drum major’s or band directors fault because they’re not paying close enough attention.

They sit in the worst seats in Tiger Stadium when trying to see if the ball is on the far 38 or 37 yard line.
Seems like they are on the sidelines with the pep band, maybe in the corner, but at least on the sideline.
What's the excuse this week about not being able to see though? Doesn't Mississippi State have one of the largest screens in the SEC?
It's pathetic what a once great band has become.

Absolutely, would NEVER talk about those kids like it was their fault. They are playing and marching to what is given to them.
There's a reason why the band has stayed the same size, but the sound quality has gone downhill. And as long as Damon Talley is around, it isn't getting any better.

There’s a lot of “back in my day” syndrome in these band threads, coupled with a heaping helping of confirmation bias. I’m just impressed that the “woke” boogeyman hasn’t appeared yet.

After a 3rd down stop is when they play it...How the F!@k the Band Director supposed to know the other team is going for it? What about fake punts?

The same way they always have before this year. Wait for the punt unit to come onto the field. You sure as hell don’t play it in a FG situation unless they miss.

First, fake punts are not part of this discussion (no way to predict them). Second, the band director should simply look at the refs manning the first down marker....it is NOT rocket science. My guess is the band director does NOT have a good understanding of football/does not know where to look for all of the "clues" on the field (like the punt team running on the field or the offense leaving the field).

I noticed them playing the first down cheer at least a couple times prematurely, i.e on third down, at least twice.

They played it when Grambling was lining up for a 28 yard field goal.

They have been playing it anytime the other team doesn’t get a first down on the third down play without even waiting to see if a punt team was coming out.

And don’t get me started on their high schooling leaving the bleachers with 7 minutes left in a half to get ready for a halftime show. Do you know how much real time the last 7 minutes of a half takes in college football? We get the band music played on the PA system because the band is standing behind the team bench for 20 minutes.
