He had the most accurate quarterback in the history of college football paired with the best route runner in the NFL(Jefferson), the best deep target in the NFL (Chase), a guy that could win any jump ball in college (Marshall), an NFL RB and a tight end who didn't drop a single pass all season and was an elite run blocker. And had an offensive line that consists of 4 NFL starters.

The scheme itself wasn't super complicated. Pre snap motion helped identify the coverage, receivers had an elite understanding of finding holes in zones, option routes in the slot and out of the back field, and in my opinion, the most important part of that entire offense, was the fact that there was always a hot option. If pressure was coming the ball was instantly out of Burrow's hands.

CEH was and is an excellent route runner, and our receivers were so good that we didn't even need him to run arrows or option routes out of the backfield most of the time. I don't think our fans understand how good Jefferson and Chase were.

All of that coupled with the fact that we never subbed players out in the middle of possessions. That was more important than the actual scheme. After the SEC title, Kirby said we ran the same personnel on the field for something like 27 plays in a row. Essentially locking the defense into whatever 11 guys they had on the field when we took over the ball at our own 20, for the entire drive.

If I were OC in 2019, worst LSU goes is 10-2.

Not because of me and how unqualified I am. Moreso because that talent could have made even me look pretty good as OC.

Options, speed, and spacing + that talent = 2019 results.

Joe Brady got more than he gave, IMO.

He used a QB and receiver combo that was able to make the Super Bowl in their first and second years in the NFL. Genius move on his part.

He spread teams out and used motion to both get guys in good spots and to make the defense show its hand (think about CEH or Moss sprinting way wide)

He used the bunch formations from the Saints/Payton playbook to do the same thing in terms of identifying.

We ran tempo with the same groups so defenses both couldn't sub and, again, would expose their weak point and couldn't adjust

That and having a GOAT-level QB and 2 WRs who were top-10 WRs in the NFL as rookies, respectively.

All of this.

A very underrated aspect of the offense was CEH. His ability as a receiver allowed LSU the luxury of not having to substitute. They go up-tempo and be equally as effective with Clyde as a back or as a WR. Burrow could identify the favorable matchups before the snap, and he had receivers who could win most of their one-on-one battles.

Thus far there doesn't seem to be a ton of creativity in Denbrock's formations (the numerous formations was a big part of Payton's offense in NOLA). However, it doesn't help when your QB isn't quickly identifying open WRs and you are still hesitant of your OL.

The optimist in me says the coaching staff is still trying to fully understand what their guys can and cannot execute well, and what works best for this particular team. Thus, I think the offense will become a bit more "dialed in" as the season goes along.

It just so happened that that particular scheme he brought in was the perfect fit for our personnel, which was loaded.

He had Chase and Jefferson in 2018 too and it didn't work out the same. Clearly the scheme had something to do with it.

If only Steve could have figured some of that out the year before. And amazing how much the OL Improved from '18. In '18 vs Bama we couldn't block a soul. A year later we set a record.

Brady gets a lot of credit in my book. He was given great talent. Give him credit; he didn't squander it.

His scheme required a really good QB to make some difficult throws. Someone who understood the game and saw the field clearly. JD is not there at this point. Not sure he will ever read a defense well enough to allow LSU to win the SEC.

Why didnt Saban win at Miami?
Why didnt Brady do as well at his next stop?

When u figure those out, you will be closing in on answering your own question.

This. I remember a coach from Clemson saying we knew what plays they were going to run but we just couldn't stop them.

Clemson is always marketing. Weak schedule every year. When this 12 team playoff starts, people will finally realize just how weak the rest of them are. SEC baby.

Meanwhile, we knew every play Clemson was running but we kept it quiet.

Developed passing game concepts that did not involve max protection, designed to get multiple options for the QB spreading the field with the concept of getting the ball into the hands of your playmakers with a QB confident and competent enough to stick his back leg in the ground and let it rip whether it was a 3, 5 or 7 step drop.

It wasn't revolutionary but it just hadn't really been done at LSU since Crowton in 2007 and with the talent LSU had in '19 it was unstoppable.

When he called the plays in from the coaches box, he gave the plays to a guy named Joe Burrow and then Joe was throwing to The two best young WRs in the NFL

He exploited the middle of the field. You have to have a good QB to do that. He had one.

Burrow didn’t arrive on Campus until June of 2018 and was in a QB battle with 3 other guys. Was named the starter right before the season. Jefferson was going into his first season as a starter plus Chase and Marshall were true freshmen.

Brady had a lot to do with the step the offense took to 2019 but those guys having a full offseason then playing in their second year together had more to do with it.

Implemented a system that adjusted routes based on defensive alignments and leverages. For example, say your slot receiver is called for an out but the nickel is playing outside leverage, they would “check with me”, alter to a slant and move inside a foot or so which gave them 2-3 steps on defender coming out of their break and burrow threw “on time” and was keying on LB biting on play action. Simple but complex at the same time. focusing on intricate details that tipped off what the defense was doing and exploiting it. That concept coupled with an elite QB who can process, deliver the ball with accuracy on time and maximize the talents of the WR’s, RB’s and TE’s and the rest is history.

He routinely got our wrs in one on onesituations and just about every play he would motion to see if the defense was in man or zone. He spread defenses out making them cover the entire field instead of the max protect philosphy of 2018 which invites more players to the los
