re: SEC on CBS era to end after 2023 season

You will see Clemson at Boston College moving to a 2:30 slot instead of being in the 7 p.m slot. The ACC and the PAC-12 (at least until USC comes back to relevance) will see their ABC primetime slots diminish and the SEC will take over some of those. The Big Ten with Ohio State and Michigan will still get their usual share of ABC primetime appearances.
This is about ESPN getting better ratings options for the ABC primetime slot with ratings monsters like Alabama and LSU. Georgia brings you the Atlanta market and Auburn brings in some of the Birmingham market. Those are much better options than getting Colorado against Utah.
The Florida-LSU game this year had to be shown on ESPN because the CBS contract wouldn’t let ABC take it. And ESPN still put Fowler and Herbstreit on that game instead of the ABC primetime game. I forget what the ABC game was that night but it paled in comparison to LSU-Florida. With the new deal, a game like that would be on ABC primetime.

How is CBS the worst?
CBS went all in on the SEC back in 2001, dropping Big 10 and Big East Games from their lineup. They knighted for the SEC when every other network was sucking off the Big 10.
CBS is part of the reason the SEC is the #1 conference in all of CFB. CBS made the SEC Game of the Week the only game on their network for that week. CBS also eliminated confusion for the CFB viewer. Without researching anything, the viewer knew that the best game from the best conference was going to air on CBS at 2:30pm.
CBS had the best graphics, the best theme song, the best production, and the best picture quality of the Big 4.
Gary Danielson isn’t the best color guy, but he doesn’t hate LSU like some of you claim.
Also, Gary Danielson is going wherever the SEC goes, so if you hated CBS because of Danielson, get ready to hate ABC/ESPN.

As much as I hate all the commercial time and the Way they can screw up game start times for LSU home games, I don’t know how anyone could see the growing Disney control of college football as a good thing. It is almost a monopoly at this point.

My hope with Disney is they will do something similar to the mega cast for all SEC games. Put the broadcast of the game synced up to Chris Blair up on watchESPN.

I like CBS’ game production between commercials. The theme music goes back to the ‘80s and still gets me fired up. Gary Danielson doesn’t bother me that much, though he has developed a strange infatuation with inserting Alabama references into non-Alabama games. And I’m convinced many LSU fans don’t mind an announcer until the first time they say something bad about LSU.
But the 4-minute commercials and the commercials at EVERY, SINGLE break in the game is beyond annoying. College football games should not routinely last four hours. And it gets old.
ESPN is good about not doing that EXCEPT for its marquee games, most of which run in the ABC primetime slot (I’m counting the CFP games in this discussion point, too). Those ABC primetime games usually have a 10- or 15-minute pregame (not necessary in the days of wall to wall football after a three-hour morning College GameDay show). And they also seem to have more breaks. So we’ll probably see more of that, especially for how much ESPN is going to have to pay in that deal. They have to recoup that money somehow.

I'm disappointed with this news

I’m afraid people think this is going to be a good thing and are going to be disappointed when they see what it actually looks like.

ALL of this. The SEC will regret this, and if Birmingham doesn't, we the viewing public will, before everything is said and done.

This is bad news. The cbs deal made us the major conference on one network. We still had plenty of exposure on espn etc as the backup deal.
Now we will just be one of several on abc/espn.

With the amount of money that ABC/ESPN is allegedly putting up, the idea that commercial breaks are going to be shorter is laughable. How do you think they are going to make that money back?
I doubt CBS wants to say goodbye to the SEC, but they have other sports rights to pay for (like the NFL) and if ABC/ESPN is putting up an insane number, welp....

I’m not sure why people don’t get this. The games may be even longer.

CBS had all the eyeballs at 2:30. No other SEC games are shown during that time slot. If ESPN chooses to show the “big” game at night, they may choose to run all other SEC games at 11 and 2:30 to maximize eyeballs on the prime time slot. That’s why I don’t think people are going to like this as much as they think.

As much as we gripe about CBS, we are going to miss it to some extent. I know I have my complaints, but I’ll miss Gary in some weird way. I miss “Uncle Verne” for some crazy reason. I even miss watching the Jefferson Pilot SEC game each week. It usually consisted of MS State and Vanderbilt, but I still miss it. I liked it more than the ESPN game at 11 now.

I agree.
I also believe CBS will come back to air SEC games after it takes a 5-season hiatus.
If you remember, CBS didn’t air CFB games from 1991-1995 but returned to air SEC and Big East Games in 1996, then SEC only from 2001 on (save for Army-Navy, a handful of ND-Navy games, and the Sun Bowl).
The SEC folks will roll out the red carpet for CBS after having to work with Disney.

They will recoup their money with higher fees on cable and satellite. Also look for them to implement more pay packages. The marquee games will not be on free tv anymore.

CBS has horrific visual quality. Always. Always looks like I’m watching through and antenna in the 90’s.
