Writing is in the wall. 12 team playoff. End of divisions. Folks there is not going to be an SEC championship game anymore very soon. Within the next five years for sure. LSU TIGERS have an opportunity to make history this Saturday for one of the last times. Pretty crazy.

There will definitely still be a SEC Championship. They make too much money off it for it to go away.

It's not crazy for lsu to be an SEC championship game but it's only been around for like 25 years.

Losing rivalry games like LSU vs Florida is a bigger tragedy to me.

The end of divisions doesn't mean the end of the game.

The networks pay too much for that content for it to go away.

Huh? The 12 team playoff has the conference champions in. You don’t need divisions to have an SECCG. Top 2 teams go.

You’re an idiot. Conference championships aren’t going to go away because of the 12-team playoff. The Power 5 Conference champs are all going to make it. They will play championship games.

No divisions won’t eliminate the SECCG either. The 2 teams with the best conference record will play for the championship. It’ll be around robin thing like the Big12 does.

I don't think it's going away but you may have teams that decide it's not worth it to risk major injury when other teams are sitting at home resting, kind of like the NFL when teams start resting players

The only thing it will be good for is likely seeding purposes and if you are in line for a bye

What advantage is it for UGA to play this game if Tenn and Bama are sitting at home resting

They need to get rid of conference championship honestly, if you’re not going to require it to be in the playoff and there’s no reason for the extra wear and tear on your players

It will just shift to win your Conference for a 1st round bye.

Also, conference championships give team like LSU, Utah, K-state, North Carolina, & Purdue a chance to make the playoffs.

I mean if teams are already making the playoffs without winning their conference or even division you might as well do away with it. It no longer serves a purpose.

But I agree they won’t get rid of it. Too much money to be made.

Too much money for the SEC to get rid of. I really don't care if they did though. The NCAA is a joke bc they used to claim playoffs would be too many games for a student/athlete to play...since then they added a 12th game and a conference championship

In the current proposed format winning the game gets you a bye so teams would definitely want to play it.

If we lose that one. I suspect that may stay. 3 permanent opponents. I think it is Florida, Ole Miss and either Arkansas or aTm.

The top 4 seeds and byes go to the highest ranked conference champions.

So they can be a top 4 seed and sit at home and rest while Tennessee and Bama are playing in the 1st round? To be the 1-seed and have their 1st game—after the bye—be against the lowest ranked remaining team

But frick all y’all too that don’t see the inherent value of simply winning the SEC Championship. It’s a huge accomplishment in and of itself and may be harder to win than the actual NC. If we’re lucky enough to beat Georgia and win it, we should hold that trophy and hang the banner up proudly. Not pout and lament on “could have beens.”

Exactly.

I agree with those who say it makes too much money for the conference/schools to want to see it go away. But it also will create competitive imbalances when teams can make the playoffs without having to actually play in the the game.

Like you said, if we had a 12 team playoff this season Georgia would have almost zero incentive for playing in this game and it would be entirely reasonable for them to sit key players in prep for the playoffs...just like many NFL teams do in the final week of the season if they have already clinched a playoff spot. Is that what we really want to see in these games? The backups for a team who has already clinched a playoff berth playing (in some cases) the backups of another team that has likewise clinched a spot?

And it is only going to take a year or two of conference championship games causing negative effects for teams who would otherwise be in the playoff in favor of those teams who don't have to play in the game for the cries to get rid of the games become very loud. It will become viewed by the top teams in the conference as more of a burden than a benefit. Not unlike in 2017 where Auburn would have been in the CFP at the end of the regular season. Yet, because as the SEC West champ they were forced to play Georgia again that loss knocked them out of the playoff in favor of an Alabama team who didn't have to take on the risk of playing an extra game against a really good opponent.

While I see what you are saying here and I agree 100%...do you really think that it isn't possible that they would do away with the conf champ games with the 12 team playoff and just take the 1st place team in the conference standings? I could see it.

For those talking about money....don't you think the conferences will see as money money as a conf champ game brings in with the 12 team playoff and potentially more. I could see a deal where each major conference gets to "sponsor" a playoff game and gets to keep the lion's share of the profit for that game to recoup what they lose from a conf champ game.

I'm not saying it will 100% happen, but it wouldn't surprise me.

If the playoff is 12 teams, it would add up to 4 weeks to a season. First get down to 8 (with 4 having bye), then down to 4, then down to 2, then down to the championship. If you have to play conference championship, that adds a 5th game.

I can't see ant team wanting to add effectively half a season after the season. This would not be like the regular season, when you are mixing in some powder a puff games; this could mean facing 5 top 10 teams in 5 straight weeks in a row.

Too much chance of a player getting injured to keep the championship game. As a conference, you can't risk that. One QB lost from Ga/Al/Tn/LSU in the SEC championship, and the fans would revolt for injury in an unnecessary game. Also, if you had just won the Heisman, would you want to play in possibly 5 more games, and risk an injury that could cost you millions?
