re: Scott Rabalais says LSU maybe better off with Mickey than Simmons

I agree with him. This team didn't have anyone that could defend the post. And Simmons played a big part in that. He would have sured up our rim protection

I think it's a useless click-bait article at a time where there really isn't anything LSU sports related that he can write about to get a lot of clicks.
If my aunt had balls I maybe wouldn't be around. What a useless, speculative article that is based on nothing but conjecture and a complete waste of anyone's time.

Simmons defensive rating was top 20 in the SEC, his defensive win shares was 3rd in the SEC, and his defensive box +/- was 7th in the SEC. Also was 2nd in the SEC in steals too.
Yet people act like he's James Harden out there on D.

Scott R has a short memory. Fans were more disgruntled with Mickey, this time last year, than they are with Simmons.

Mickey disappeared for half of the season last year. He also missed a layup that would've put LSU into the 2nd round of the tourney last year. Martin was the bigger factor for the team by seasons end last year. Simmons would've done much better if he had a Mickey and if Quarterman played like he gave a shite this year. The only players that even tried by the end of the year this year were Simmons and Blakeney.

If LSU could have traded one more year of Jordan Mickey
Wrong.
Mickey was soft inside. Once teams figured this out, he was done.

Its like people forget he scored 1 fricking point against Auburn in the SEC Tournament
Or a whopping 12 against NC State.
Ben Simmons apparently only pads stats though.

Come on man, you really think B. Simmons played good Defense this year?

The retardation in this thread is incredible. Of course we'd have been better off with Mickey. Simmons gave 0 shits about the team this season. Mickey was a much better position fit. How is this even a question?

Well if you think so then I guess that settles this useless, speculative conversation that can never be proven one way or the other.

I guess his shot blocking ability would help out with the team. He would still be one of numerous players who don't consistently move their feet on D
This. He and Martin kinda played when they wanted to as well. Really started my being concerned about CJJ not being able to get his players to do what he asked. They both half-assed on ball screens consistently.
Mickey was a shot blocker but he was not a good defender one-on-one. 7-3" wingspan and athletic. Helped us in that teams knew he was there under the goal.
And maybe he was not 100% in that N.C. State game, but 5 missed free throws and two missed lay-ups in the last 10 minutes.....ouch.
Also noted had we not beaten Arkansas at the end of the year, we may well have not made the dance. And he did not play that game.
All that said I'm pulling for Mickey and glad he played his way onto the Celtics roster.

I agree..This team had no chemistry..I'm not crazy about players leaving after one year either
Posted on 3/23/16 at 10:14 am to Mikey Ballgame
For sure, simmons stat's were good but he became a side show and we never played as a team
Posted on 3/23/16 at 10:18 am to Mikey Ballgame
Simmons was a better overall player, but Mickey was a better fit for the overall team....
and last i checked, basketball is a TEAM sport... so, draw your own conclusions....

That's the great thing about speculation, no one is ever wrong!

I'd say he was a decent defender. And advanced metrics say he was a solid defender, going by his defensive rating, DWS, his defensive +/- box score and all that. Im not saying he was a great defender, but he was ok. Some people make it seem like he was absolutely horrible on D and was a defensive liability. I never really saw that from him.
I will say that he's a much better perimeter defender than he is an interior defender. And he had to guard post players msot of the time for us because only he and Victor could match up with them. And with the way the NBA is playing now a days, with your small lineups and the evolution of the stretch 4, he will be guarding on the perimeter in the NBA more than the interior. Which is good for Simmons.
And at times, I think he protected himself from fouling because he knew that if he got 2 fouls on him early, that Johnny would sit him for the rest of the half. So at times I think he played a little passive due to the fact that if he picked up another foul, he would sit on the bench. Plus, college bball refs are horrible and would call refs at the smallest bit of contact, even if someone was playing passive.
Again, not saying he was an elite defender. But he wasn't nearly as bad as some people make him out to be and he wasn't a defensive liability out there. He was an ok defender.

There were some times he was atrocious (Houston for example) but it usually (like the rest of the team) came down to effort.

Watchu think?
Imagine Simmons on last year's team instead of Mickey.

quote:Well we are all entitled to our opinion but looking back in retrospect Simmons was never a part of LSU. It wasn't the LSU basketball team it was the Ben Simmons show. He was here, not because he wanted to be a college student and learn something or even because he wanted to play college basketball. He was here for six months because he had to do something before he could go pro. More specifically he was here as a favor to his godfather Dave Patrick.
Just thank the guy for being here and move on. My God at this rate he won't even claim LSU Look at how big of an asset Shaq has beeen to LSU, and for some reason LSU fans can't help but shite on him instead of seeing the big picture
His attitude and lack of effort reflected this. Do you really believe for one single frick that he cared for LSU, it's tradition and heritage or that he will even think about us as he collects his 100 million and starts trying to prove he is the player everyone says he is.
Do you think he would have played in the NIT if we had an offer and accepted? Don't you think that is the real reason we said we wouldn't go. That and Hornsby being injured. Get in touch with reality.
I have never been so disappointed in a player, a coach and a team. I am not proud of the Ben Simmons era. I want to forget it. If Simmons is not linked with LSU ever again it wouldn't bother me a bit.
