It takes talent to play the position. There are aspects of the position that require more talent than other aspects.

Stopping balls in the dirt is a critical component but you’re not making it to LSU solely for your ability to stop a ball in the dirt. If that’s the sole trait LSU is recruiting catchers based on, we have major problems.

Holy strawman... who made this argument? And why are you bringing it up as if anyone was?

Yep. They worked with Beloso and Milazzo a good bit. Beloso lost his confidence - it was obvious. Milazzo may have had the same issue - he just didn't wear it as obviously as Beloso.

I’m the guy who played high school ball who sits around and goes “maybe our players for a top 5 program should bat better than .150” and the players we recruit for the position “should be half decent at the position they actually play. Not act like marginal defense is some higher expectation.”.

So yeah, regular joe with one set of eyes.

What 5a program did you play at

No passed balls is impressive. Or the pitchers just had crap stuff

Go back about 3-4 pages. I was told this is a rare trait at the Division 1 level. It should not be undervalued. Apparently so rare we only had one catcher that could block balls.

I explained to you why it's difficult to find someone to do both really well at the college level. DRock gave you high school stats to show why Milazzo was such a highly touted recruit. He went to Zachary, too. Not some 1A school in the middle of nowhere. I'm not sure what more you need, here. The results weren't to anyone's liking. But you act like we didn't have Sciv, Pap, Gibbs... Feduccia was another miss that everyone thought would be much better. Sometimes the projections are wrong and you move on.

The idea that "how dare LSU not have a catcher that can hit for average and play good defense!!!" is ignorant to how difficult finding a player like that is these days when most elite players avoid the position.

I don't think anyone is expecting to put a guy behind the plate that will hit .350 and be Pudge back there.

Is it really that hard to find an adequate, not great defensive catcher, and an adequate .250, not great hitter?

I just looked at the stats and if they were a catcher and played more than 20 games, here's their batting average, so some of those guys might have been DH'ing a good bit, i don't know.
Ar-Kansas - .257
MSU - .287
Ole Piss - .280
Bama - .277
Auburn - .219 and .200
Faggies - .240 and .231
Vols - .260 and .271
Vandy - .249 and .300
Florida - .317 and .298
South Carolina - .241
UGA - .254 and .196
kentucky - .283 and .349 and .343
Mizzou - .204 and .258

Mizzou/UGA/UF were the only 3 teams in the conference to have double digit pass balls on the year.
Mizzou/UF/Kentucky had the least amount of caught stealing on the year.
Sounds like MIzzou and UK had the worst defensive catchers in the league.

LSU had a catcher hitting .135 who started 83% of the games behind the plate.

Tell me again why its so difficult to find a decent hitting and defensive catcher?

I was going to post the stats for the catchers on the final 4 teams standing in the CWS - but Logan Tanner is a phenom, and I will always be bitter about not having him in Baton Rouge.

Only half the league satisfied what you would call decent. For the best league in the country a 50% success rate should show how difficult it can be. I think LSU should be one of those teams. Like I said, I'm not trying to lower anyone's expectations. I'm simply pointing out how teams can miss. What you really need to do is go back over a decade and see how often teams have "decent" catchers. I bet LSU is as successful as anyone else.

I didn’t realize these guys were on the team this year. Way to expand the argument over a decade to prove a point.

Nobody is asking to do both really well. Just serviceable. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a D1 player at LSU to bat .250 and be half way decent in the field. If those expectations are wrong, call me a dreamer.

When you focus on a single example or in this case year, we call that an anecdote. It means it may not be the "rule" and simply a case of a one-time thing that isn't a trend. So we look at recent history (Pap was here just a few years ago) and before to give us context. Welcome to the world of formulating a valid, defensible opinion.

I've said it multiple times now. I'm not trying to lower anyone's expectations. And Teddy just gave a great example of how difficult finding both even to be "decent" isn't easy. a

I don’t think that’s what the statistics show at all. It seems finding a catcher that plays half defense and a norm of .250 is expected.

The only teams that had both were MSU, Ole Miss, Bama, Arkansas (barely), Tenn and Vandy (barely). 6 of the 14 schools.

36% of eligible players defined as catcher batted below .250. That excludes LSU.

Of those teams only one team, Mizzou, players did not perform well in at least one aspect of the game.

There are alot of facets to catching that arent going to show you how effective they are. Passed balls is one of those. I watched 99% of the pitches lsu threw this year. You wont see a stat of saved wild pitches, but milazzo did alot of that this year. Cant speak for the other guys youve listed.

id look at percentage of caught stealing, and its still not a perfect stat to judge by, because catchers like milazzo get reputations, and teams stop stealing on them

So only Mizzou failed at both. Got it. Not that that is relevant since we are talking about being decent at both. But thanks.

Maybe you aren't the best at counting, or maybe you're just looking for what you want.

I think we can assume a guy hitting .240, or .241, or .249 with decent defense will suffice. It doesn't have to be exactly .250 to qualify as decent.

I count 11 teams with decent catchers. UF may have been bad defensively but they hit over .300. I'll take a .300 hitter who let 6 more pass balls on the year than we did.

Auburn and Mizzou were the only other teams in the league with shitty catching like we had. Everyone else seemed to have decent play from the C position.
