I’ve never heard of this scenario, and it sounds highly unlikely.

CA Bertman made no attempt at all to fight Huizenga and entice him to stay at LSU and made no attempt/offer for him to come back to LSU if he didn't like the NFL.

I've heard this as well, but I don't think it was because he was a Cheap arse, I think it was an ego thing. Bertman had an ego too and Saban had become bigger than him. I'd heard stories of Saban going in Bertman's office and chewing him out on the fairly reg. I think when the opportunity came, that's why Skip didn't really fight it that hard.

I still enjoy reading the fantasies that Saban would have won all these titles at LSU. LOLOLOL

Saban would NEVER have gotten three-four mulligans at LSU like he did at Bama. LSU does not have that kind of clout.

I’m glad he did.

I’m glad we had Les and O19…..
I’m glad we have Kelly now the tough years make you appreciate the great ones. The Bama dynasty is over and it was about Bear and Saban. LSU championships are about those e players and teams.

He would have left after his second title, probably 2006 or 2007.

The biggest what if in the Saban/LSU saga is if West Virginia had actually shown up against Pitt in 2007.

Interesting story.....

PS - I was on a bus in disney world heading back to the hotel, midday. Only people on bus were my family and Jordy Hultberg and his wife and a child I think, cant recall exactly. Anyway, I was wearing an LSU sweatshirt and he said something and introduced himself. I told him I knew who he was but didn't want to bug him. We talked for a while and he told me that during his 2nd year in Miami, Saban contacted LSU to see about getting his job back. By that time Miles had been in place for two years and LSU wasn't going to fire him for no reason and bring Saban back. I assume this story was true, not sure why he'd say that if not..... csb.

"he did reach out after 2006 through private channels. Why do you think he originally suggested we hire reverend nuttsack? because he knew he would fail and would have an easy entry back to LSU should he fail in the NFL."

Saban recommended Nutt because Saban respected Nutt's coaching. Nutt gave SAban all he could handle. Nutt would have been a great coach at LSU with the players LSU had. Nutt did well at Arkansas but fell short at Ole Miss because Old Miss could not develop quality depth at that time.

This is some great fan fiction.

Only 6??? He won that many at bama. And he didn't have them rolling for a few years after he took over there. He had us HUMMING when he left. Enough so that an ABSOLUTE DORK in less miles could come in and win one after Saban left.

I think he wins MINIMUM 8 if he stayed at LSU until he retired. Possibly 9 or 10.

Miles' original contract at LSU had a clause in it that guaranteed he would be the highest paid coach in the country if he won a National Championship (Nick had same clause in his).

so even if the Michigan job never came open, Les was going to get a raise that year.

not just any raise either.
but a raise that paid him more money than any other college football coach in America. Had nothing to do with "outbidding" anyone else for his services.

Bertman hated how much more people cared about 1 football championship compared to his multiple in baseball

everyone looks at things from their own perspective but even though he put us on the college baseball map, college baseball wasn’t important to us before and isn’t a big deal to most college fans across the country, and is largely a non revenue sport, ESPN, cable, and sports programming also share the credit for exposure of the sport

Well, he did become like Bear Bryant. Same school and all

never forget trant when he signed for bama and his first handful of years there.

of course lsu fans coming off a NC and being obnoxious and conceited as ever, downplayed their hire and remember just about everyone (except for me) thinking Miles would be the better coach going forward and saban would be a failure.

They laughed when he lost 6 games his first year screaming overrated. They laughed when he lost to the Utes.
They said he wouldn't stay much longer at bama after winning it all his 3rd season because he's never just stayed in one spot
They got mad and jealous when he stayed and kept winning in recruiting and championships
They couldn't wait for him retire

i would have traded Miles for Saban a day after Miles won it in 07, no question, but our fanbase thought Miles was the next messiah
