Saban said this yesterday and he is RIGHT...

“What I say next is: Through the years, I’ve been an advocate of playing all Power 5 conference schools, playing more conference games. I know it’s a more difficult schedule but I think it would be better for the fans, it would be better for … in the playoffs right now, if you want to talk about that, that system is if you lose a game, you’re on thin ice. If you lose two, it’s almost impossible. I think if we played more like the NFL — the New York Giants won the Super Bowl a few years ago and lost six games. You play quality opponents every week and probably end up losing more games, but I think at the end of the day it would be more competitive for everyone involved relative to the fans and players and the selection committee and all the things that go into it.”
This would mean that those million dollar pay days for the South Alabama's and UL's of the world are over...

Sorry, but he is right...

There are Pro's and Con's to both arguments.
Having a few easy games built into your schedule gives you tune ups, allows you to rest key players, and gives backups more experience. The latter being something the NFL doesn't have to really worry about as college players get a finite amount of time with their team. The NFL doesn't have to put as much stock into player development as they can trade players that aren't working out.
He's right about some of the benefits. I think it would make more money for the University and surrounding community as there is a noticeable drop-off in crowds for the rent-a-win type games.

Theres only 32 NFL teams to pick 12 playoff spots from.
Good luck deciding the top 4 out of a 120 team league when there will probably be 20 teams with 10-2 and 9-3 records.

But, we would get our money's worth every home game. The UL's of the world are what they are and should stay what they are, 2nd tier.

One thing they can and should do is end the rankings until it becomes a meaningful number. Leaving to smaller schools high and dry is a bad idea.

Example,
Would you rather see LSU play:
Kansas State
Arizona
Washington State
Or
Jacksonville State
Southern Miss
South Alabama

Would they need to maybe extend practices available to make up for lack of "tune up" games?

A major con would be for an SEC team to play the for-now-eight game league schedule, plus potentially having to play another in the league championship, for a total of 9 SEC games. But even taking that game away, having an SEC team play 8 tough league games plus 3 other Power Five teams...it would come down to which team is the last one standing. These are college teams & if a team, like Fla. now, loses 5-6-7 starters, they are stuck with who is left on the squad.Whereas an NFL team can either trade or pick up another player on waivers when injuries hit.

I might be in the minority here but I've always loved that about college, the urgency. You have to win almost all your games to win a championship, maybe one slip up.
I'm not in favor of more games and a nfl like season. It's why I'm not really a nfl fan because the passions isn't there because they can afford to lose games. It's boring imo.

you would have to have a 6 or 8 team playoff with the conference champion getting the bid. if you had this you could schedule all the games you want. not a bad thing to have 1 or 2 rentawins, but 3 or 4 is too many.

The problem is that it rewards teams from weaker conferences.

I wish we could do round-robin in the SEC.

I think that every conference needs to have a championship game and the winners of each conference enter the playoffs. Seeding could be determined by a committee.
The teams no in the playoffs could go to the regular bowl games.

I agree. I always have, call me crazy, but Big 12 has it figured out. Most of their schedule is comprised of Big 12 opponents, yet they still fit in some little guys. That way you get a true champion in the conference - but you don't kill the smaller division schools fb programs. Not sure why Saban is saying this since he gets a hall pass to the SEC Championship every year.
Oh that's right....he's a "true" advocate for college football.

The smaller group of 5 schools base their entire athletic budget on these games against FBS P5 schools.
Not every athlete can go to Ohio State or Alabama. Or even Vanderbilt.
Those small schools need the income of a rent-a-loss to keep their athletes on the field.
ETA: Saban should know this since he used to coach in the MAC.

How about picking 6 teams out of a 72 team league with 6 conferences of 12 teams each?
That shouldn't be too hard. Win your division. Win your conference. Make the playoffs. Top 2 teams get a first round bye, like the NFL. 12 team conferences are far easier to schedule than these 14 or 16 team conferences anyways.

Only P5 team left out in this scenario is TCU, who would get in if we leave out the service academies.
Army becomes Houston and switches divisions with Temple
Navy gets switched for Tulane (S. Carolina goes ACC, Auburn goes to the SEC East, and Tulane joins the West)
Air Force becomes TCU and trades divisions with OK St.

This is probably necessary but kind of hilarious that it would be the SECOND time Division 1 would be split.
