This is great insight for anyone that was baffled (but grateful) by Aloy's decision to throw to 3B in the 9th.

Great take. Gotta want the ball with a plan.
He’ll be better for it. So will Dickinson

You have to play the ground ball or it will play you. You have to be aggressive with ground balls.

I agree but not totally…
That ball was hit so hard, he didn’t need to charge the ball to turn 2… he could have sat in hiis stance and flipped it over to second and they would have turned that and got Milam by 2 strides at least. That was the biggest blunder of the game…. Far more than Bear dropping the turn in the 8th (not sold that even beats the runner) far more than the 1B in the ninth ranging too far and allowing Curiel to reach. Way more than the poor bastard in left field and the 2B trying to jump 10 feet in the air.
That was the SEC POY and he simply blew it. He did not have a plan for whatever reason. 9/10 he probably turns that easily and we are watching an elimination game right now. But sometimes shite happens and teams are cursed. I mean look at the Cubs and Sox all those years and the crazy shite that happened to them. Aloy will likely go on to have a huge MLB career…. I feel worse for that left fielder… I’m not sold on his career path, and he will get the highlights. People will forget about the bigger mistake

Yep. Milam was barely out of the box when Aloy fielded the ball. It wouldn’t have been close

I’ll listen to the guy who played 10 years of middle infield in the majors.

Or just watch the fricking play. That was the easiest double play ball I have seen in a long time. Flip to second and you beat Frey by 3-4 feet and throw to first and the game is over. The last thing you do in that situation is get the force out on a run that doesn’t matter. Worst case, you try and turn 2 and you don’t get Milam,,, same situation with 2 out and 1 runner in scoring position. Or you make an error and Curiel scores… still have the lead with 2 outs… but at least you gave yourself a chance to win. You took the ball out of your hands and placed it back in the offenses hands when you made that play.
The book says to try and turn 2 100/100 times dumbass

But go ahead and buy the media hype that it was just an awe shucks moment…. He blew it more than anyone on the field and the media is doing a disservice to the left fielder by only showing his physical error which was far less than that mental error

Let's say he gets the guy at 2nd, but they don't turn two. The same results still happen if the left fielder misses the catch.
I see everyone's point. If he gets the double play, game over. Yes he obviously should have tried for two, but the same results could have still happened.
Unless he turns a double, obviously.

Correct. The issue is….. he didn’t attempt to win the game.
In they situation you HAVE to attempt to win the game

Good point, I think the video is dead on. Kid didn't know where he was going with the ball.

Well in some situations that is the correct play, like with 2 outs.
I've been wondering if maybe he thought there was 2 outs.

Irrelevant in this instance. Pierson was a chopper and he’s running from left side. Not close to the same on Milam’s ball. I will agree he didn’t prepare himself for a ball hit to him. It’s coached at every level. Know what you’re going to do when before the ball is put into play of its hit at you. Thanks for win

You are correct. Milan still scores on the left fielder error.
I know they scored it a double

it would have been a dp ending the inning without the 2 runs scoring. Watch it in slow motion, had he caught it he is out by a half of step.
Doesn't matter, those things happen, and we won.
Agree, the biggest mistake was the SS not turning that DP. The ball hit to left field had a LOT of top spin on it and was sinking on the fielder, plus he lost his balance, probably due to it sinking on him.

Milam could have been thrown out by the third baseman the way he was running. That was an easy DP. He wasn’t running hard. Go rewatch it.

I thought this from the moment that it happened because I couldn’t believe he had such a big lapse in game situation awareness

Four (4) of five (5) consecutive plays killed the hogs but none worse than the failure to attempt to turn two.
- Curiel ball to first
- Frey walk
- Failure to turn two on Milam hit ball
- Hernandez sinking liner to left bounces off fielder
- Jones looped liner up the middle off a jumping second baseman’s glove
Even if Arky doesn’t convert the double play after the turn and throw to first, you still end up with two outs and runners at first and third - Curiel and Milam.
