I met Coach Arnsparger several years ago as he watched his son coach High School football. He didn't lose to Alabama during his 3 years as the head coach at LSU - that endeared him to me!

RIP Coach.

He was probably one of the greatest defensive coaches ever, in college or the NFL.

Bob Brodhead had a stormy relationship with Arnsparger after he hired him as LSU's head coach, and did not have great things to say about him as a person. If Brodhead's version of Arnsparger leaving for Florida is true, it was not admirable of Arnsparger.

But both men made great contributions to LSU football and LSU athletics. Both are gone now. That's sad.

Sad news, his defenses were AWESOME.

Would always wave his hat to the crowd at road games.

I got about half looped one day and called information, got Arnsparger's home phone no. in Baton Rouge, and called him up. He answered on about the 2nd ring. I thanked him for what he had done for the program and we talked football a bit. He told me he was from Parish, KY where many of my ancestors were from. Then we talked KY history for about five minutes. Quite the gentleman he was.

A guy from my hometown played for the Giants a while and Bill was his coach. The guy, also deceased, could never pronounce Bill's last name properly. Every time he said it, it came out different.

Also had three or four kids from my hometown play under him at LSU. All liked him, but all said if you screwed up on the field, you came out and stayed out until your replacement screwed up.

Finally, a buddy of mine (high school coach) knew him through recruiting, etc., and said at a high school practice Bill came to, he stood with the head coach and each time the offense broke the huddle, he told the coach what they were going to run. He was that good of a defensive mind.

He was a great coach but he won with Stovall's recruits.

... and didn't do a lick of recruiting when he was at LSU, then bolted for the florida AD job after he used up stovall's recruits... yeah, LSU owes arnsparger a debt of gratitude... *sigh*

I'm sure he was a good man & he was a great coach but, facts are facts. He didn't recruit & he pushed Archer for his successor.
