Baylor lost to Texas tonight to drop to 17-13 overall and 8-9 in conference with now no hope of making the NCAAT short of winning the Big XII tournament.

If anyone recalls from recruiting, Ricardo Gathers from Riverside Academy in Reserve and a former high 4-star/low 5-star recruit, chose Baylor over LSU in February last year. By all accounts, Trent Johnson just dropped the ball on him despite many folks saying he liked LSU a lot, and he ended up choosing Baylor, who at the time was riding high their Elite 8 appearance. When Johnny Jones was hired at LSU on April 15, Gathers signed his LOI to Baylor the next day, so he was off the board immediately for any last chance flip.

Now fast forward to now, LSU and Baylor actually sit fairly evenly at this point, when Baylor had quite a bit higher expectations, and LSU had lower expectations. LSU's missing link this year was a solid big to play alongside Johnny O'Bryant III, which Gathers has played well in a reserve role at Baylor this year and probably would have put this LSU team over the NCAAT hump as a starter. Instead, he might get to play against LSU in the NIT tournament it appears...what a turn of events.

To make things possibly worse for Gathers, Baylor is losing 2 senior starters for next season and freshman 7 footer (Isaiah Austin) is expected to make the pro jump as a projected late 1st/early 2nd round pick. So they will definitely lose 3 starters, and possibly a 4th in JR. PF Cory Jefferson, a mid-late 2nd round projected pick. Baylor's expectations for next year, wont be very big if they lose 4 starters, but still could be rough losing 3 starters. Meanwhile LSU is a "sky is the limit" team for next season losing only 1 starter and bringing in a Top 5 type of recruiting class.

Oh how things can change, ever so quickly. I wish Trent Johnson left right after the season ended and gave Johnny Jones the time to secure up Ricardo Gathers

I would kill to play Baylor at home in the NIT if it's possible.

That being said, Gathers would've been huge this year.

I thought his perception of the direction of LSU vs direction of Baylor played against LSU quite a lot. While they weren't bad last year, they had two horrible seasons before (2-14 and 3-13 in the SEC). Compared to where Baylor was headed, I can see why he'd think Baylor would have been a better team. I do not think this was the case.

Was thinking about this when I watched the game. He's not scoring for them but he's rebounding well and we could obviously use his size. Best thing about missing out on him is he won't take Jarrell's minutes next season.

Oh it definitely did, he didnt want to play for Trent Johnson, despite liking LSU.

Everyone saw where the program was headed under TJ...unfortunately

He's actually an efficient scorer. He only plays 16.8 minutes a game but averages 5.9 pts (51.2%) which is good and 5.7 rebounds which is really good. He is literally almost the same size as JOB III too at 6'8, 260. Could you imagine 2 guys that size playing down low together? We would have rebounded so much better this year, and honestly, I dont see us losing to USCe/AU/UGA early on like we did. We also would actually matchup much better with Florida/UK/Mizzou (maybe not Mizzou as much as the other 2, as Bowers is such an athletic 4).

I think with just Gathers added to this team, we are 11-5 right now instead of 8-8. Even if we dropped 1 of those first 3 SEC stinkers, I think we would take 1 we lost against Bama/UK/Mizzou/TN.

And as far Jarrell goes, he's probably starting at the 3 next year so he wouldn't have taken away from him. He would have taken minutes from Odo and we probably dont go after Darcy Malone.

Is he? I might have a odd picture, but I thought he was a undersized PF in the range of 6'7" 220-230. I looked it up to make sure, but wow. He really is the same size as JOB, but just a tad shorter.

Edit: I went and looked at some of his old recruiting profiles. I wasn't wrong. Either the info they had was way out of date or he's grown a lot in a the short time he's been in Baylor.

I'm sure a major factor was the recent guys Baylor has put in the NBA too. There have been some disappointments with the development of guys like Perry Jones and Quincy Miller under Scott Drew, but at the same time, seeing a guy with pretty much the exact same skillset as Gathers in Quincy Acy have a very successful college career and make it to the NBA was very appealing to Rico.

He wouldn't play much for us next year. Baylor can keep him.

He's definitely not 6'8, but he's a rebounding sob if I've ever seen one. Would have definitely helped us out this year, but so would have Calvin Godfrey being elegible. Gathers is going to have a nice 4 year stint at Baylor. He won't be an all-american or anything like that, but he'll stay productive.

Trent just couldn't be bothered with things like talking to people or even Gathers at his games.
