The "Gestopo Bastards " made a deal to get Daddy Dale for all his years of ridicule. Simple as that..
LSU paid for it eventually, but that's what happens when you call out the system for what it is. NCAA couldn't give two shits about what actually happened with LE, LSU, Dale, Roy Williams, KU. They saw the opportunity to nail Dale for his outspokenness and did so.

The biggest crime was why did LSU recruit him at all. Saw him play only once in high school, but came away unimpressed. He looked stiff on the court to me.

Lol! The last thing you could describe Lester Earl as is Stiff. In high school he was a great player. Could throw it down! A lot like a Tyrus Thomas or Stromile. Very athletic...just not a refined shot.
And Corey Powell wasn't in the same league as LE.
Easy to judge in hindsight because of his college career. But in high school he was legit.

Earl then became unhappy at LSU and made a deal with the NCAA to report the infraction in return for being able to transfer to Kansas with no penalty.
Actually, apparently Roy Williams got the NCAA to hold up his eligibility unless he testified against LSU...afterward, then he could have his eligibility back...to play for Roy.

I know what I experienced playing against them both. We couldn't do shite with Corey, but we contained Lester. All we did was kept a body on Lester the entire time and that kept him off the glass. He couldn't shoot worth a damn so when the coach scouted him that's what he told us to do. We had a center who was big enough to push his arse around and keep him out of the paint.
Now Powell was a different story, he lit our arse up. I think he scored half of their points. I think he had around 28 or so. I vividly remember this game b/c this was one of my better games in high school. I scored 19. Glen Oaks was ranked #1 in the state at the time and Hammond High (the school I played for) was ranked #5. We ended up losing that game 58-53 I believe. Corey Powell made a statement from the tip during that game. Lester won the tip and tapped it to another guard, then Powell ran full speed towards his goal. The other guard threw a half court ally to Powell from the tip. Very wild game and I still can picture it in my head. Almost every last detail.

However, since Shaq is talking about getting paid, I'm sure he and Earl weren't the only two to receive aid from a booster.
LSU was wheelin' and dealin' in the late 80s and early 90s. Dale Brown absolutely knew about it, as well. There is a reason why Shaq would leave his pimped out Bentleys on front of Audubon Ford when he was playing pro ball.

Saw him play extensively at Glen Oaks. Was the second best player on that team behind Corey Powell.
Did you happen to make any of the Central. Vs. Glen Oaks games that year? Trey McClure would the shoot the lights out from way behind the 3-point line son! I've never seen high school game atmospheres like those years...

The NCAA is controlled by the university presidents, no one else.
They have the Penn St syndrome , that is why they did not declare Cam ineligible , they slap bama on the wrist , ignore blatant cheating in basketball. They don't want to kill the golden goose...

I genuinely love these stories and hearing about high school days. It brings back memories of my own and reminds me of guys I frankly have forgotten about over time. As consistently the worst starter on my high school team my appreciation for talent was that much more keen. These guys definitely had it and were part of a time that probably will not ever be repeated.
