In 1989 we felt shafted by all of the prognosticators, thought we deserved a better bowl and believed we would destroy Syracuse. Very few fans showed up. Additionally, Somehow, we didn't prepare for their 'option game'. Here's a comment from Syracuse:

"I think we showed we could play today. They (LSU players) were cocky. They have some arrogance. We knew that, but we put on our pads and we proved ourselves on the field. This was the biggest victory in my 4 years at Syracuse. "LINK

I'm getting the same vibe now

LSU had a losing record in 1989.

You mean 1988, when LSU won the SEC, but the Sugar Bowl took Auburn (co-SEC champs, even though LSU won head-to-head).

Comparing that team (last glimmer of decency before Archer's downward death spiral for the program) to this one is silly.

I thought of the Hall Of Fame Bowl and the Liberty Bowl when we played Baylor.

However, for all of Les' shortcomings, the fact that the players are looking forward to the game says a lot.

He won't lose them the way Archer did.

LSU 1989 is not even a fraction as strong as LSU is now, if you told any LSU fan in 1989 that we would win 2 NCs within the same decade NONE of them would believe you. I was a teenager in 1989 and I was certain then that LSU would never ever win a NC in my lifetime. Our current LSU squad would decimate that 89 squad.

Syracuse is always disrespected. They have more football history in their left cheek than LSU

The game was played on New Year's Day, 1989, following the 1988 season...

Sadly, I was at that game. This was my final game in Tiger Band.

The game sucked but, the trip was fun. I had just graduated.

We set off the smoke detectors in the the hotel (something on Clearwater Beach) smoking cigars and drinking Jack Daniels. I was also nearly arrested for open container on Clearwater beach. Fricking cops came from everywhere. Those dicks made up pour out our booze.

Good times.

Silly arse statement. If anything, one might could argue their history up until this decade sort of mirrors LSU, as both teams sort of shared national heydays in the late Fifties. What LSU has accomplished over the past decade, probably exceeds what Syracuse did in the 90s (although, they admittedly had a nice run, then). You can't compare the passion of the two fan bases.

And yeah, I suppose Jim Brown and possibly Ernie Davis are > than any LSU players, but that's about it, on what you could say they have history-wise over LSU.

Was there too but just a junior. Now family is headed to Atlanta and we're meeting some of our same friends. This game just has that same feel to me. We were ranked high and very pissed that we did not get a better bowl.

This is LSU Tiger Band Drum Major Scott "Thumbs Up" Hanna "pacing" us right before we stepped off for pre-game at the 1989 Hall of Fame Bowl v. Syracuse. Check out the stands--obviously packed.

I don't really remember much about the game because, as a true Tiger Band member, I was so hung over I couldn't see straight. What I do remember is that the halftime show and the game were absolutely horrible.

Fun Fact: This photo was taken with FILM and had to be developed with chemicals, not downloaded!

I was also in Tiger Band for this game. Good trip, bad game.

Little did we know the cliff we would fall off.

OBTW, I miss your photo threads, Lucky.

The LSU players didn't want to be there and pretty much mailed it in. They wanted to be in the Sugar Bowl.

Why not have some in the right cheek, too? That way one could make an entire arse out of their football history.
